Berggruen jamás olvidó a Alemania.

There are many places to see Picasso of course, but this one is exceptional. Whether you are familiar with his work or not, this lovingly curated exhibition will warm your heart with accessible appreciation of the great master painter. One feels taken into his confidence and the notes accompanying the works divulge divulge Picasso’s unique perspectives. If you are not already in touch with his styles this is the best introduction I have seen in any country so far. If already a connoisseur, you may well appreciate the depth of knowledge that has gone into the presentation. This a small museum — it is dwarfed for instance by the large exhibition in Barcelona — but here you have an intimacy and grasp that is not so commonly found. What is more, the enthusiastic staff also have considerable knowledge and are happy to spend time in discussion, though this may be less so if it is very busy. Slightly out of the centre as the vast number of Berlin museums go, but absolutely worth it. One I will...

I return to this small museum every time I visit Berlin. This time I got very lucky because my visit coincided with its grand re-opening after a renovation--with free entrance. The artwork of Paul Klee is displayed in small rooms in the top two floors. Beautiful! Matisse's work is displayed the next level, followed by two floors with Picasso. One room has a special exhibit of Cézanne. The walls are white. They installed special alarms the make a loud beeping sound when a visitor stands too close to the artworks. With so many small rooms, it would not be financially feasible to have a guard in every room, besides it was so busy on opening day, there wasn't any room for a guard! No free wifi, but free WC! There was a food truck in the courtyard where you could buy coffee, but it was too busy. Don't be tempted like we were to have coffee across the street at the Art museum, the cappuccino...

I am a big fan of Henri Matisse, so it was the driving force behind my visit to this museum, which is located in the Charlottenburg district of Berlin, not far from the Schloss Charlottenburg and its beautiful park. The collection of the museum is very impressive, especially for those who like Paul Klee and Picasso, their pieces are presented more than others'. Honestly, I was pretty surprised to find a different side of Picasso's artistry. That being said, I still enjoyed very much the section devoted to Matisse. The museum also has some pieces by de Chirico. Last but not least, the staff of the museum is very friendly and helpful.

I have a soft spot for small museums with beautiful art collections and Bettina Berggruen Museum is certainly one of them. Located in a beautiful mansion a bit out of the way, it’s a beautiful area to visit and also gives you access to a very nice quaint garden after your visit. There is a very carefully curated collection on display: Giacometti, Picasso, Klee, Cezanne, Brague, Matisse. If late 19th early 20th century art is to your liking, you are guaranteed to be happy here. I certainly enjoy the museum every time I visit and recommend it to all of my friends.

You better take a look at the map/ layout in the beginning. Lots of smaller rooms and you might miss some rooms completely. The most extensive Klee collection that I have ever seen and I am confident that lot of artistic development was lost on my unprepared self. Picasso is much better known and therefore more approachable. Well worth the time and money. Take your time, sit down, enjoy.
