It's a splendid place filled up with gold and marble. Full of late baroque paitings cover space from floor up to the ceiling: Rubens, Van dyck, Caravaggio, Ricci etc. Gallery present paintings exactly like king ordered to hang them so you have possibibility to see something real. I don't understand many reviews here. First of all few reviews here are about Cecilienhof palace where potsdam conference took place, second of all complaining about short tour is just silly becouse that Gallery is a partner of Google Art&Culture what means that you can find it easily on your smartphone and have easy access to detailed explanation of pictures etc. Light is good there, only under dom there's a little bit too much shadow. Price of 6 euro is more than fine to have access to such...
Read moreNot the best museum to go to if you plan to hire a guide.
Enter the vicinity and you'll see a breathtaking view of the scenery all around the place. Beautiful exterior and interior.
Enter the house and slowly you'll be disappointed. Taking pictures require a fee of 3 Euros, and most of the area has been cordoned off so freedom is scarce here.
Tours around the place are extremely short. Half and hour tops if you have a tour guide. Not much can be learnt considering the fact she talks more about what the area is and less of what happened there. And with such short amount of time, I found using audio guides would've been much more meaningful.
Exit the museum and like most museums a gift shop awaits. A plus though, a wide array of gifts for the young...
Read moreThis is a wonderful painting collection and well worth seeing. There are masterpieces by Caravaggio, Rubens, van Dyck, Maratta, and others. Three things keep it from being five stars: The paintings are hung in the old style (floor to ceiling, up to five layers) and can be hard to see; the lighting comes from a wall of windows opposite the paintings, meaning there is lots of glare; and there is no good book about this extraordinary collection. (There is a small book, available only in German). Still, if you love art, this is not to be missed. The Caravaggio of doubting Thomas is worth the trip all by itself. Photography is allowed, although the glare makes...
