Autostadt in Wolfsburg, Germany, is a vast visitor experience and museum complex dedicated to the world of automobiles, particularly the Volkswagen Group. Opened in 2000, it sits adjacent to the Volkswagen headquarters and factory, making it a unique blend of theme park, museum, brand experience, and customer center. Spread across a sprawling 28-hectare site, Autostadt offers a multifaceted journey through automotive history, design, technology, and sustainability, appealing to car enthusiasts and families alike.
Museum and Exhibition Highlights A centerpiece of Autostadt is the ZeitHaus Museum, a multi-story automotive museum that showcases around 260 vehicles from over 60 brands, chronicling the evolution of car design and engineering. The ZeitHaus features classic cars, prototypes, and design icons, including important Volkswagen models like the Beetle, Golf, and famous vintage campers. This museum traces automotive history from early inventions to modern-day innovations. Visitors appreciate the well-curated exhibits and multilingual information, including interactive elements like QR codes that allow access to engine sounds, offering an engaging experience for all ages.
Besides the museum, the Autostadt includes brand pavilions representing Volkswagen Group marques such as Audi, Porsche, Skoda, and Lamborghini. Each pavilion immerses visitors into the essence of each brand with sleek architecture, multimedia presentations, and access to the latest models. Though primarily a showcase rather than salesrooms, these pavilions give a comprehensive view of automotive culture and innovation across the Volkswagen umbrella.
Experience and Visitor Attractions Autostadt is more than a museum. The vast grounds include beautiful landscaping with lakes, bridges, and parks, making strolling the complex a pleasure. Visitors can enjoy guided factory tours (booked separately), providing insight into modern automobile production processes. The facility boasts the world’s largest glass car towers—two 200-foot-tall glass silos used for vehicle storage and pick-up—which are architectural highlights and symbolize automotive efficiency.
Events and Amenities Autostadt hosts seasonal events including summer festivals with music, sandy beaches, boat rides, and winter Christmas markets adding vibrant seasonal atmospheres. Multiple onsite restaurants offer a variety of cuisines, catering to diverse tastes and completing the visitor experience with comfortable dining.
The customer center serves as a unique car delivery point where Volkswagen customers from across Europe can pick up their new cars, adding an element of exclusivity and excitement for car buyers.
Visitor Experience and Feedback Visitors consistently praise Autostadt for its architectural grandeur, meticulous planning, and the breadth of experiences offered. The blend of historical insight at the ZeitHaus, immersive brand pavilions, family-friendly activities, and scenic grounds makes for a highly enjoyable visit. Some note the complex can feel large and sprawling, requiring considerable walking or the use of shuttle transport. While the admission fee is considered reasonable for the quality of attractions, additional experiences like factory tours come...

Read moreWe spontaneously decided to take a factory tour of the VW parent plant in Wolfsburg and thus also connected a visit to the Autostadt. For the Autostadt the admission is 20€ per person. At first we thought the price would be fair. But unfortunately it turned out that the entrance was only for the museum (where some interesting exhibits were not exhibited by Volkswagen) and for the exhibition in the entrance building. All other pavilions of the individual manufacturers (Audi, Porsche, Skoda, VW etc) are freely accessible and do not require the admission ticket. Thus, we found the offer for admission a bit low and overpriced. The park is very nicely laid out and you can comfortably walk and sit there. The factory tour that we had done for 10€ per person is fair in terms of price. The only criticism when booking the factory tour is that you are asked to fill out and print out the registration form on the website and hand it in upon arrival. We have the year 2025 and in this time it should be possible to collect such data digitally. Especially since the tickets for the factory tour have not even been scanned. Only a fleeting glance was cast on the map. You are picked up by a bus and driven to the factory and there you get on open buses and you are driven through the factory. Of course, it is only a small insight and other manufacturers give a deeper insight into their production site. But all in all, the factory tour is absolutely recommendable. But whether you really look at the Autostadt for this price is up to everyone. We would not recommend it...
