You don’t need to eat here to get sick — breathing is quite enough. It’s not a market, it’s a live-action documentary on how plagues begin.
I have seen some things in my life. Middle Eastern shuks where cockroaches tried to pass themselves off as dates. Fruit juice machines that had clearly never once made the acquaintance of soap or water. Rats weaving seamlessly through the crowd as though they, too, were regular customers. And yet — the Varvakios Central Municipal Market manages to top them all.
Halfway through, we had to check Google Maps three times to make sure we were still in Athens, Greece, the European Union, the so-called Western developed world, and not in some alternative dimension where public health is a forgotten myth. At some point I honestly suspected we had fallen through a cosmic drainage pipe and landed in the sewer system of Karachi.
The market is a purgatory of terrible sights and odours. Meat simply lies about on butcher’s blocks in the stifling heat, flies hosting a carnival. The air reeks of blood, of fish, and — inexplicably — of cheese, though I didn’t see a single wedge. As if some god, unsatisfied with the already gruesome bouquet, thought: let’s add cheese to complete the olfactory demise.
Yes, there are fish restaurants tucked into this nightmare. That was why we came. But one glance at the surroundings was enough to quash our appetite. We fled instead, walking briskly through the inferno, trying not to imagine the inevitable gastroenterological emergencies awaiting those brave enough to eat here.
Outside, in the so-called “open air” section, pigeons feasted happily from nuts for sale, pecking away like honoured guests. I am convinced this is precisely how bird flu was born.
I cannot fathom how the municipality of Athens tolerates such an unhygienic disgrace in the very centre of its otherwise great city. A civic embarrassment, and a...

Every City we visit, we always make it a point to try and visit its most talked about and relevant market, better still if it’s of historic value!
The Varvakios Market looks back to its 130 year old existence! Obviously the building pretty much reflects that, not kept as well as many other old markets around the world, still somewhat impressive!
While Fruit & Vegetable areas are primarily located outside the actual structure in a side road, the main hall is pretty much decided into a large seafood section and a rather large primarily meat area with a few poultry stalls thrown in!
It’s pretty clear, that seafood, with Athens and its large seafront & harbour place an important part in the Greek diet! as such the selection is quite impressive! The Octopi and Calamari, but also the variety of Fish is substantial.
The meat area seems to focus on Pork and Lamb, from cuts to whole carcasses, in any which way you want the cuts! Also the beef section is quite interesting!
There are a couple of restaurants inside the building, I frequented one, and had their traditional Fishsoup, which was ok, but not mind blowing! Their breads however with olive oil (what else) and a good dusting of regional herbs which can be found a plenty, was darn good!
All washed down with a local beer! Lunch was dine!
Of course outdoors of the main hall one finds shops specialising in herbs & spices, but also loads of wonderful Olives in many varieties as your heart desires!
Overall a wonderful visit to feel the pulse of the population! Highly recommended but not for the faint hearted!
