We stumbled upon Kotzia Square while exploring Athens on foot, having started our walk from the lively Monastiraki area. We wandered through the bustling market, with its overwhelming smell of fresh fish and vibrant displays of goods, before finding ourselves in a more open space. There, right in front of us, was the impressive City Hall, a grand neoclassical building that seemed to anchor the whole square. We learned later that it was called Kotzia Square, named after a former mayor of the city. It was a beautiful space, with another striking building, the National Bank of Greece Cultural Centre, also showcasing that elegant neoclassical style. What really caught our attention were the busts of famous Athenians, like Pericles and Solon, dotted around the square. It made us realize we were walking in the footsteps of some truly important historical figures. Kotzia Square, though an unplanned find, is an open space to sit while soaking in the lively atmosphere of modern-day Athens and feeding the pegions.

The Kotzia square ( Konstantinos Kotzias was politician and he served as Mayor of Athens between 1934 and 1936) is a spacious and elegant square, a few steps from Omonia Square. The square is located south of Omonia square and north of Monastiraki square It's surrounded by beautiful neoclassical buildings among which the old Town Hall of the Municipality of Athens On the opposite side of the Town Hall, there's the National Bank of Greece, situated in a beautiful neoclassical building. Next to it is a very modern building. It's an outstanding example of modern architecture and in the hall under a glass floor, you can see the remains of the old city walls. Between the square and the National Bank building is Eolou Street, in the middle of which there are some glass pyramids that house further archaeological finds. The square is also known as City Hall Square, or Platia Ethniki Andistassis. It has changed names many times throughout the turbulent history of the Greek State. There is also a small archaeological site where you can see the city's water supply system dating back to 2000 years ago, which has been recently brought to light following the excavations for the underground car parking In the area around you can also see: The Athens Central Market, "Varvakios" (Athinas Str.). This is literally the Grand Central Station of food.Everyone shops here, from celebrity chefs to neighborhood grocery...
