I climbed up to the Venetian Castle of Plaka just before sunset, and it turned out to be one of the most beautiful experiences in Milos. The final stretch is along uneven stones, but in just a few minutes you reach the top — and the view is worth every step: the gulf glowing in gold, the white rooftops of Plaka and nearby villages looking like sugar cubes, and the sea shifting colors until it fades into deep blue.
I recommend arriving at least 30–40 minutes earlier to enjoy the changing light over the houses and to secure a good spot to sit. In August it can get busy, but with a little patience you can always find a quiet corner. Wear comfortable shoes (the stones can be slippery) and bring a light jacket — the meltemi wind can be strong even in summer.
There are no cafés or facilities at the top, so take water and maybe a snack with you. After the sun sets, stay for another 10 minutes: the “blue hour” with the first lights of the village is pure magic. On the way there some spots where you can take pretty good photos looking down the island. Also the famous church of Panagia Thalassitra when viewed from the hiking trail provides the most iconic image of Milos.
