We kept trying to get a table here for a few nights but it was usually crowded with a long waitlist right after sunset just like most of the other venues nearby. Needless to say we were excited to finally get a table here one night. They are nice enough to offer you a glass of wine while you wait for a table which is why I decided to give 1 star instead of 0. We tried the eggplant salad with tahini as an appetizer and were not impressed at all. Flavorless and just bad. We decided to give them the benefit of the doubt and continued on to order the prawn and lobster pasta for 2. The pot served could feed a family of 12, which we weren't particularly disappointed about since we were still hungry and that eggplant salad (more of a bad dip) did not serve us any justice. The two of us had the same reaction as soon as we took a bite. We both knew that we had just tossed 29 euros down the trash. The pasta was mushy and the sauce was so under seasoned that we actually thought the chef might have forgotten to add in some salt or whatever else was needed to make this edible. I asked the waiter if this was an innocent mistake of the chef and we were blown away with his response "we don't use seasoning in any of our food". Even after seeing we were not willing to eat that pot of mush he did not even try to offer us a new dish or anything. Conclusion is feel free to eat here if you enjoy tasteless, flavorless, overcooked food. The place next door is a million...
Read morePerplexed as to why this restaurant has so many 5 star reviews. The seating is cramped and uncomfortable, but the ambiance makes it passable. The main dishes we had were the lamb shank and the shrimp linguine in cream sauce. The shrimp quality was low and the cook was poor. There was no snap or bounce to the shrimp, just a bit mushy and lacklustre. Flavour of the cream sauce was nice, and the portion was large, but it did become an oily mess at the end. Additionally, the table next to us had an orzo seafood dish and complained the shrimp was grainy. Our lamb had good flavour but one would expect a slow cooked fall of the bone texture at 22€, this was by no means tough but again becomes a forgettable dish very quickly. The last item we had was the musoka, which was maybe not to our tastes but it felt like a bland shepherds pie. I know it’s somewhat of a common practice to charge for extras on the table, but 3.80€ for 4 slices of bread is steep. Thankfully we didn’t opt to take the bread and they removed the charge.
Ultimately you can ignore the rave reviews. The food is nice but nothing to write home about. For those on the fence about visiting, I can confidently say you won’t be...
Read moreThis place is always great and has been great for a few years I’ve been visiting.
I’ve had the shrimp pasta for 2 (it’s definitely for 2 large eaters). Last year I made the mistake of order the pasta and another main meal with entre and bread and I had shrimp pasta for lunch at the beach the next day.
This year I knew to only order the shrimp pasta and nothing else. Only just managed to finish it all with my wife but we were both extremely full we couldn’t have dessert afterwards.
Also had makaronia mit kimma, grilled fish, lamb and goat over the years and all dishes are exceptional.
Other restaurants in Plaka change over the years (for the worse) or end up closing down and changing completely, but Avli has stayed consistently excellent.
There’s usually a line to get in most times at night, but tends to get quieter at around 10pm. But don’t fret, usually when waiting in line they give you a glass of wine. Sometimes you might wait a minute, other times maybe 20 minutes, but it’s usually worth the wait.
Went last week and will probably go back tonight after sunset.
The photos are a mix from 2023 and 2024, I can vouch the photos from last year are still...
