Santorini really is a nightmare , the locals were very annoyed by the constant invasion every day during Spring and Summer by the overwhelming numbers of cruise ships and lack of any revenue they generate . It is a simple photo opportunity nothing else any “ trinkets or momentos “ are available on board and they don’t use the restaurants / bars as Fully Inclusive on board . The shop owners are quite rightly fed up with annoying Americans , Asians and Europeans crowding the streets for views over the cliffs of Fira , and it really was a terrible experience there . The use of donkeys to climb up to the town from the port in blistering heat loaded with fat , lazy people was upsetting . Overall as we had two days during our NON CRUISE Island hopping and arrived by ferry and left by flight was a never again visit . Limit the ships as the locals would prefer and preferably include a provision that the wealthy obnoxious entitled “ sailors” get a lesson in manners before...
Read moreThe all white buildings town sits on the top of a mountain and over sees the on all sides. It stands proud even after experiencing a series earthquakes in February, recording 12800 earthquakes in 10 days of February 2025. The donkey is for those who find it safe to ride it even when it is hot and it does seem cruel to over work the donkey by getting up and down of the 500 steps with a load in it's back. The cable car is there as another option but one has to pay with both money and patience because the queues are long both at the foot of the Mountain and the top when coming back down. Once one makes it to the top, the unlimited photoshoot starts. So many...
Read moreFirst, I want to mention that in order to experience Fira and the surrounding communities you really should find somewhere to stay for a couple of nights vs. just stopping for a few hours from a cruise ship! Also, we were there at the very end of September/early October and it was still busy, not crowded, but busy. The locals said the months leading up to that are crazy-busy-crowded. Aside from those tips, the island of Santorini and especially the city of Thira (Fira) are absolutely amazing and unique. It is SO much fun wandering the paths up and down through the hillside village. It like little secret passageways with the the most gorgeous doors! Great restaurants, shopping, people watching and mostly (for me) taking...
