St. Andrew's Church is not just any other place of worship in Darjeeling but it is a piece of history. It stands testimony to the grand transformation of Darjeeling from a forgotten densely forested habitat of few hundred people to one of the most beautiful and popular hill station of the world. The Church is located in the Mall Road, near Chowrasta and is considered to be one of the most iconic landmarks in Darjeeling. In order to reach St. Andrew's Church, one can see St. Andrew's Church opposite to the Gorkha Ranga Manch (Bhanu Bhawan) and on a road going up towards the Darjeeling Tourist Lodge just beside the famous Loreto College.

There is a regular Sunday morning service held at 9 in the morning between the month of March and November and at 9:30 in the morning from the month of December to February. Everyone is welcome to visit the Church. The Holy Communion Service is held on first and third Sunday of every month. The church also holds a Christmas Carol Service which is very popular and attended by many in the area.

It is one of the beautiful Church you will find it in Darjeeling and is considered to be one of the oldest Church in the hills. The foundation stone of the Church was laid down on 30th November 1843.  The Church is simplistic in the way it is built and the way it looks but it has a kind of tranquility that you can experience only in a place like this. There is no entry fee for anyone who would like to visit the Church. The church has a provision to accomodate around 150 people and holds regular mass services for the local Christians every Sunday.

St. Andrew's Church also holds great significance for the history of Darjeeling as it is one of the oldest buildings to have been constructed in Darjeeling when it was in the process of being 'developed' after the British acquired it from the Raja of Sikkim. It was built in the Gothic Style of architecture which is one of the signature style of British Architecture. The origin of this architecture is believed to dated back to 12th century AD. Some of its characteristics include the pointed arch, the ribbed vault and the flying buttress, most of which is found in the St....

It stands as a testament to the rich history and architectural heritage of the region.

Architecture and Design

The church showcases traditional Gothic architecture with its pointed arches, stained glass windows, and high, vaulted ceilings. Its serene, whitewashed exterior, contrasted by the lush green surroundings, creates a picturesque setting. Not many people can claim an entire town as part of their legacy, but Lt. Gen. George W. Aylmer Lloyd is an exception. This is the man credited with having ‘found’, or let us say ‘discovered’, the town of Darjeeling, Bengal’s queen of the hills, in the 19th century. Having arrived in Ghoom near Darjeeling in 1828 as part of an East India Company mission to wrest administrative control over the region, Lloyd fell so deeply in love with the area that he never went back home. When he died in 1865 he was, appropriately enough, buried in Darjeeling, where his tombstone, declared a heritage structure by the Archaeological Survey of India, stands to this day. And his is the name displayed most prominently within the beautiful St. Andrews Church, one of the principal attractions that draw your attention as you walk along Darjeeling’s celebrated Mall Road. Alongside Lloyd are other names engraved on marble and brass plaques, reminding us of some of the area’s...
