Mall Road in Darjeeling is a charming and iconic pathway that offers scenic views of the Himalayan peaks and the valley below. Let me take you on a virtual stroll along this delightful road: Starting Point: The Mall Road, officially known as Bhanubhakt Sarani, begins at Chowrasta Mall, which is the main square in Darjeeling. Here, you’ll find benches where both locals and tourists sit, enjoying the ambience and views. Observatory Hill: As you walk along, you’ll notice a low iron fence on the left, while the Observatory Hill rises steeply on the right. The hill’s stony wall is covered with green moss and shrubs, and if you look up, you’ll see plenty of rhododendrons. Private Cottages: On the left side, you’ll pass by lovely private cottages that are homes to locals. This area is now mostly inhabited by the wealthy. Shaded seating areas are available for relaxation amidst the greenery. Bhanu Bhawan: Further down, on the left, you’ll find Bhanu Bhawan (also known as Gorkha Ranga Manch Bhawan). This huge white building with a golden dome houses an auditorium and hosts public functions. Look up at the dome, and you’ll see a statue of a man holding a Khukri, a traditional Nepali curved knife. Loop Walk: The entire Mall Road forms a loop. It starts from Chowrasta Mall, goes around Observatory Hill, and returns to the Mall itself. Locals and joggers often use this loop for exercise and leisure strolls. Shaded Pathway: Almost the entire Mall Road is shaded with trees, making it a pleasant walk even during sunny days. Views and Serenity: As you stroll, enjoy the sheer serenity and some of the best views that Darjeeling has to offer. Whether it’s early morning or evening, you’ll find families, joggers, and locals enjoying this picturesque route. Remember, the road that leads up to the Mall from Gandhi Road, bustling with shops and stalls, is Nehru Road, not the Mall Road itself. So, if you’re ever in Darjeeling, take a leisurely walk along this historic and scenic pathway! 🌿🏞️12
