I love vintage and old culture building also European style and I think Cathedral has all of them. I am a muslim and I adore their construction and they still keep it that way like original way and not much changing. I like their top decoration so look like castle in the middle of somewhere. Classic but classy. It was a good experience to visit there and I respect them too. They have 2 small praying area : 1 is outside like in the middle of tree and that one looks beautiful, it is an open space pray area, and another 1 is inside the church in the corner. They also have a museum (if i'm not wrong) that open at 10.00 am. To come inside the church is free and open at anytime and for anyone. If you want to come here you can ride Transjakarta. Used weeks ago I ride route 5C but I don't know what number now because they change the route of 5c. But ride Transjakarta that can be stop at Pecenongan and continue to ride 1PJ to stop in front of Istiqlal. You can cross from here but kinda dangerous. Continue to walk to your left side or right side of Istiqlal and walk a little, there will be a cross area in front of Cathedral and then enter. I hope soon there will be an easy access to Cathedral, and the Transjakarta stop will be done soon. If you want to try walk, walk from Monas, choose the route that close to Istiqlal, and walk right there (it is like a side door), walk to left an cross over with traffic lamp in front of Mabes TNI AD, walk again and turn left you will a lot of resto and Ragusa an then you will see the fork (pertigaan) and turn right, walk a little bit and you will see Istiqlal and then Cathedral right beside...
Read moreJakarta Cathedral also known by its official "The Church of Saint Marry of Assumption" is the seat of Archbishop of Jakarta and situated in the heart of Jakarta, stands right across the Istiqlal Mosque. Both Cathedral and Mosque is seen as a landmark of religious harmony in Indonesia.
Consecrated in 1901, two years ahead Cathedral will celebrates its 120th anniversary. I myself have visited this place more than 20 times since I first landed in Jakarta in 2014, either for just visiting, being my friend's companion for weekly mass, or celebrating Christmas and Easter.
Honestly, I found the architecture of Jakarta Cathedral very impressive as I have never seen before back then in my mountainous hometown. It stands perfectly and rocks hard. I would recommend people everytime they visit Jakarta to drop around this beautiful house of worship.
Compare to Istiqlal, Cathedral is much smaller in term of area and building, but more organized and generally cleaner. Inside the building, I felt calmness and my heart rejoiced. The last time I visited (three days ago), accompanied by Linda (friend from UGM), we saw a preparation for Christmas eve. Also there were akolits (putra altar or altra server), they were preparing for tomorrow's mass.
I give five stars 🌟 for this place because it is overall clean, it has decent toilet and toiletries, securities were so humble and easygoing, mass attendees were not disturbed by friend who wore veil, and of course it architecture. Seriously, we need one like this in...
Read moreI have to say that this cathedral is MAGNIFICIENT.
There are many things that fascinated me. First, the location of this cathedral is right in front of the grand mosque of Istiqlal. It is how wonderful to see these two different worship place standing side by side.
Second, the architecture is very beautiful. It has nice detail that you can see from the outside. The design, ornaments, and the details inside the cathedral are so fascinating. It really looked like the cathedrals in Europe.
Once I step inside the cathedral, the atmosphere is so relaxing and quiet. You do not hear anything from the traffic outside. There is one strong scent that smells really good. It is the smells of the candle. I guess it is white candles. Also, the cathedral is quite big which can provide a lot of seats.
This cathedral is really a good place for praying, if you are a Catholic, they always conduct prayers on Christmas day or other monthly and weekly prayer.
I also recommend this place for those who are not going to pray here, like me. It is worth it to visit the biggest cathedral in Jakarta and admire the beauty and every aspect of this cathedral. This cathedral is open for public. So, anyone can visit Jakarta Cathedral to take photos or sit on the bench while admiring the art. They have a museum too if you want to explore more about this Cathedral.
This is a must-go place if you are...
