I was apprehensive about committing to this training but I am so glad that I did, it has been one of the best experiences of my life I consider myself a relative yoga novice; I didn't do the course specifically to train to teach yoga, more to develop my own practice, but even though I was older, less fit and less flexible than any of my peers I was still able to learn and participate in all aspects of the course. UYH pride themselves on providing 'yoga for every body' and I can attest that this is true - everybody is made to feel welcome and encouraged to accept where they and their body is at, whilst being open to the possibility of evolution and progress. The standard of the teaching on the course was phenomenal and the expertise of the teachers was second to none. More than this all of the teachers were very approachable, open and generous with their time and knowledge, and they seemed genuinely interested in our development, both as students and teachers of yoga. Whilst all teacher training programs have to be commercially viable at no point did I feel like this was a purely commercial enterprise, our group was small (and group size never exceeds 12) so there was always a fantastic teacher to student ratio, and everyone involved in the programme was very committed to ensuring we had the best experience and ample opportunities to learn and develop. We met daily (and often twice daily) with Sheila, the wise, astute course leader, for meditation, guided journaling and sessions on yogic philosophy and self development. She encouraged us to think critically and consider how what we were learning applied to our daily lives, without ever being dogmatic or prescriptive. She was also very receptive to our feedback and used this to structure our timetable. Nicole, in addition to being a phenomenally talented and inspiring vinyasa teacher, was a constant source of support and was always on hand to encourage/comfort/console/trouble shoot. Sandi delivered teaching sessions on precise asana alignment, and classes that pushed us all to discover new limits of physical and mental strength, with long holds and a lot of deep breathing! Nina is a beautiful soul and her classes were tailored to whatever we needed at the time, be that encouragement to push through fatigue (maybe with the help of some pranayama!) or a more restorative session. Anatomy teaching by physiotherapist and yoga teacher Michael was fantastic, clear, relevant and really tailored to our needs and with ample time to ask questions and discuss. Nico, a warm, wise and perceptive teacher inspired us with his flexibility and creative flows and made the goal of attaining arm balances and headstands a possibility, (even if not right now, then in the future with his carefully articulated drills!) In addition we got to practice with and learn from other teachers from the school in their open classes - so thank you Ketut, Yudi and Arik. All of this was delivered in the most beautiful location, amongst peaceful rice fields and outside the madness and chaos of central Ubud,(although this was only a short walk or bike ride away, should you want a bit more stimulation, or an excellent massage!). The 200 hour YTT is a sizable commitment, both in terms of time and financial outlay but I felt the course at UYH was worth every penny. Other students clearly thought so too and it is a testament to the course that the school welcomes many past YTT students who return to take classes there year after year. I certainly plan to be one of them! Thank you to the wonderful course team for curating such an amazing experience. Even though I had no specific plans to teach yoga when I started the course, the experience I have had 'on the mat' has made me want to make this available to others so watch this space - you may have made a yoga teacher out of me after all!!

Updated review to reflect my recent experience here in Oct/Nov 2024: There’s a reason I came to 15 classes here over the course of three weeks - her name is Nicole and she is an amazing instructor. She teaches a fantastic Dynamic Vinyasa class 5 times a week which will push you, challenge you, make you sweat, focus your mind and inspire you. Her voice combined with her vocal cadence and style of delivery is simultaneously motivating and calming, encouraging without any judgment. She speaks with conviction, from the heart and from hard earned life experience when she talks about what yoga can do for you. Her classes adapt to all levels and she gives you the confidence to listen to your body in order to decide what you are capable of that particular day. Some days I had more energy and went for all the vinyasas. Some days I had less and skipped a lot of them. The environment she cultivates in her class makes it feel 100% ok and judgement free to do so, which I truly appreciated. Her instructions and cues are clear, concise and easy to understand. When the class size was smaller, she would come around for much appreciated alignment adjustments. If it weren’t for Nicole teaching here, I’d still come for Sandhi’s class and Nina’s class, instructors whose classes I have enjoyed in the past. But this particular class with Nicole motivated me to commit to coming 5-6 times a week. I can’t forget to mention what a beautiful yoga studio this is, situated in the rice fields in an oasis somewhat hidden away right in central Ubud. The views are amazing and there’s nothing like being surrounded by such beautiful green nature to calm your mind. The studio has retained its welcoming vibe that initially kept me coming back 5 years ago. The ladies who work there are always sweet and friendly. I’ll definitely be back at some point! *Original review from 2019: I decided to create my own yoga retreat in Ubud based on the reviews of this yoga studio and I’m very pleased that my expectations were thoroughly met! Spectacular outdoor setting in the rice fields, small classes accompanied by the sounds of running water and chirping birds, kind and friendly instructors who came around to give adjustments, a welcoming atmosphere without pretense. In the past week I’ve taken six classes here, ranging in size from 3 to 12 students. There’s no sense of having to be a yoga person to come here, no sense of having to wear the “right” yoga clothes to practice here. I consider myself a beginner and wanted personal attention and adjustments, which the small class sizes allow plenty of. Furthermore, the classes are serious but still fun and very much enjoyable. If you want to work up a sweat, go for the Vinyasa class with Nyoman, more intense (in a good way) than other vinyasa classes I’ve attended elsewhere. The Yin class was a revelation - I’ve never taken one before but decided to stick around after the Yoga for Beginners class one day to try this class and it was the deep stretch my body didn’t even know it needed! I was worried I might be bored in this class, with poses being held for several minutes, but the instructor Sandhi was great at keeping us focused with his clear and easy to follow instructions and verbal guidance. I really enjoyed class with Nina - she’s sweet and approachable. I would love to take a class with the owner Sheila one day, she lives here and seems like a fountain of knowledge when it comes to yoga. The place is actually her house and it’s quite incredible and impressive how she’s managed to turn it into a successful yoga studio as well. Thanks and I’ll be back!

Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) August 2024 My journey with UYH has been nothing short of magical. During a short trip in Ubud, UYH caught our eye with its tucked-away sanctuary-like environment and organic reviews that felt like it was going to be a less commercialised studio. My very first class was Nicole’s 9 am Vinyasa (little did I know it was gonna be one of dozens to come!). Her class was absolutely amazing, I remember thinking to myself that it was the best class I’ve ever experienced in my years of going in and out of yoga. Her sequence had a natural flow, and her high energy demeanour undoubtedly lighted up the room, but the key for me was her empathy as she observed keenly and adjusted sequences/tips according to the profile of the class each time. She truly embodied the mantra “yoga for every body”. It wasn’t until later on when I understood that her expertise was the fruition of both her natural talent in teaching, as well as years of hard work behind the scenes in honing her craft. The best part is, I would later realise that Nicole was a representation of the team of extremely talented teachers at UYH. I came across the Yoga Teacher Training (YTT) students after the class and was keen but wasn’t sure when I’d be able to set aside a month for it. Nicole left me with the message “When you’re ready, you’ll know”. I kept it in mind. Little did I know, an opportunity came by just a few months later and I joined the Aug 2024 YTT. Looking back, I deeply appreciated how genuine the teachers/staff were, and the personas of those whom the studio attracts. It was clear from the start that the focus was on the precision/flow/mastery of the asanas, in-depth introspection/connection with the self, and finding alignment between the body and mind. It was less of the ‘voo-voo’ stuff, as one may say. Trainers are evidently very experienced, and there was a good mix of expertise amongst them across vinyasa, Iyengar, yin, and restorative, and each of them taught exactly what they were experts in. Theoretical (study of yoga) and anatomy classes were in-depth and well customised to the needs of the classroom as well. I believe in choosing the right studio that suits your tastebuds, and for me, it was definitely the right choice to do this with Ubud Yoga House. If you’re considering a YTT with UYH, or just curious to learn from an ex-student’s POV, I’m happy for you to reach out personally and I can share more. (My partner came by to shoot for us on our graduation day - enjoy the photos below!)

I did my 200 hours YTT at the Ubud Yoga House this August and I have to say it was the best gift I have ever made to myself. The location in the rice fields is so beautiful and quiet (except for ducks and frogs) and the architecture of the house is very open and warm. Sheila and her teachers made us feel like belonging to their family. Sheila created a safe space for us in which everyone could find his true self and it was easy to open up in our small group of only 8 students. I loved to listen to Sheila's lessons about Yoga Philosophy and Mindfulness Meditation, she has such a great knowledge and so much of experience. I want to thank her for sharing her wisdom and humor with us and being such an inspiration! The Yoga teachers Arkellah, Sandy, Nina, Ketut, Denise and Nico made us perfectioning our asanans, increasing mobility and strength or just releasing all tensions in the Yin classes. Sandy's Iyengar Asana Labs were amazing with all the props including chairs and I could really feel the difference in my body after class. On very exhausting days Sheila rewarded us with the very tasty bliss balls from the Traveler's restaurant close by. In general Sheila took very good care of us and we got always welcomed with coffee or tea and bananas. Different workshops were offered focusing on "Selflove", "Selfrealisation", walking meditations in the rice fields, optional sound healing sessions and the Agni Hotra Fire ceremony. This all was even more than I expected and Sheila adapted the teaching schedule to our needs and interests on a weekly base. Kuching the Yoga house cat always surprised us by coming to the upstairs yoga terasse, or welcoming us at the path to the yoga house in the morning. The path itself is magical and a stunning location for sunrise or sunset pictures. My accommodation was at Rizky's and I had a very comfy and spacious apartment there. For me it was the best option to only have breakfast included as I could try all the tasty restaurants in the rice fields or just walk 10 minutes down to the main street to encounter the life there. And talking about breakfast - Sheila organized such a fabulous breakfast menu at Pukako's nearby and I am already missing there heavenly carrot cake and the friendly staff. I expected a Yoga teacher training and what I got was a YTT certificate combined with an open heart and a deep re-connection to my true self and all my colleagues. THANK YOU SHEILA FOR MAKING This HAPPEN - SUKSMA.

I have just completed my 200hr YTT at Ubud Yoga House. One of the best plus points of this YTT is the location. It set off the main pathway in the middle of the rice field. It’s very accessible from Ubud via Grab or GoJek. When you book your training, you are sent a document detailing recommended accommodation. I stayed at Rizky, which was literally next to our included breakfast spot Pukako. It was ideal if you needed to change, shower or be on your own during break times. The other main positive point of this venue, is the small groups. We had 11 students, but their maximum is 12. Another point worth noting, is how many styles of yoga are covered during the training. Sandhi provided Iyengar classes, workshops and asana labs. Most courses only focus on Vinyasa, but as a Sports Therapist, I found the art of adjusting and modifying incredible. Lucinda provided the anatomy training, and again, I really enjoyed this element of the training. Nicole brings an element of Power Flow to the classes, which again is a lovely addition for the “Pittas” who need some oomph to their classes! You will also experience restorative and yin classes. It is important to note that this YTT doesn’t seem to have a packed out schedule like other schools close by, but you will still cover as much as you need to without feeling overwhelmed and stressed! The day ends at 530pm giving you change to explore your surroundings. Lunch and dinner is not included, which again, I preferred, as Ubud is a vegan Mecca, and one of the reasons I love it so much! You are spoilt for choice at affordable prices, so including meals is not necessary. You also have long enough breaks to order lunch to your accommodation using Grab app. Saturdays you will only need to do a morning class, and Sundays are your day off. You will be tired, but may use these days to check out the markets, the pool clubs or perhaps events like Kirtan, sound healing or aesthetic dance. I cannot forget to mention the highlight, which is the King of the Yoga House, the magnificent Mr Kuching, who is Sheila’s cat. He will appear to check in on you when you need some zen energy. It makes me very emotional to write this review, as I felt like I was there forever, but I am also looking forward to returning to my family and using my new skills. Thank you Sheila for sharing your home.

I just finished my 200-hour yoga teacher training at Ubud Yoga House, which is located in the middle of a beautiful, quiet rice field. This is a small boutique studio that offers teacher training with a very small group of students, setting it apart from the bigger commercial yoga schools that run large trainings every month. Sheila, the owner of Ubud Yoga House, taught us yoga philosophy, meditation, and other topics drawn from her own life experiences. She also customizes the classes and daily journal prompts to meet her students where they are in life, which made everything feel so personal. Because of the small class size, we got a lot of individual attention from each teacher and had the space to ask as many questions as we needed. All the teachers we had were really great—knowledgeable, supportive, and passionate. They brought their own unique perspectives to the training, which made the learning process feel rich and well-rounded. We didn’t just learn how to teach correct asanas, adjustments, and cues, or the basics of yoga anatomy- we also learned how we can apply this ancient yoga philosophy into our lives in ways that lead to self-realization. Our group was made up of seven women from all over the world, and I loved how we supported each other. We were all at different stages of life, different ages, different cultures and with different stories, but it felt like we were on this journey together, lifting each other up every step of the way. I’m so happy I chose Ubud Yoga House for my training, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a truly personalized experience.
