Just visited the National Maritime Museum of Ireland on my own — and honestly, I didn’t expect to be so drawn in. Housed inside a beautiful old church, the atmosphere alone is worth the visit. But what truly surprised me was how alive everything felt — sea life, history, shipwrecks, navigation, lighthouses — all told through immersive, interactive displays. There’s a quiet magic in walking through maritime history beneath stained glass windows. The huge lighthouse lens and the Titanic stories really stood out for me, and the recreated radio room felt like stepping onto a ship mid-voyage. It’s clearly designed to engage both adults and kids — I kept thinking how much children would love it here. It’s educational, visual, and full of little discoveries around every corner. A hidden gem. Peaceful, fascinating, and definitely worth visiting —...

Stopped in with my 3 year old son today. Thought I'd test the waters to see if he'd be entertained enough to behave in a museum. Museums are sometimes a bit stressful with toddlers, because they can lose it at anytime. Well, it was a success. He was so excited to be in there, checking out one boat and maritime display to the next with elation. Joe who volunteers there was with us pretty much the whole time showing us around. It made the experience even more fulfilling. He was so kind, engaging and encouraging with my son and I really appreciated that. 😊 Thank you again if you read this. I hope I remembered your name right 😋 Besides my lil guy loving it, I found it quite interesting. Worth a visit! Will definitely come back in the near future. Great for kids and...

Saw the museum as we wandered around Dun Laoghaire, which exuded a pleasent holiday atmosphere on a sunny day. The Museum is in a converted church, is small and easy to navigate (bad pun!), and does family tickets for a modest enough price. They pack a lot in for such a small area, and provide free guided tours which I would recommend. Quite a grown up place as it traces the history of lighthouses and maritime history in the Irish Sea mostly. Nonetheless they cater for the small fry and our pair enjoyed train sets and drawing, as well as the bigger ship models. A nice place to pass an hour or so and pleasent staff.

Lots to learn about technology in maritime. For example, did you know that metal interference with compass was solved for ships only by Kelvin (Google "Kelvin balls")? Most objects have well written descriptions to them, with great Irish humor. Want to smuggle guns? Graphics shows how Irish did it several times in 1910s. make sure to learn how to rescue people in the sea without swimming in hi tech way before drones. Also, small cafe right inside was very helpful to take a break.
