The bridge was originally called the Claddagh Bridge and built in 1848 (exactly 50 years after Wolfe Tone's death). The bridge was renamed after Wolfe Tone in 1935.

Wolfe Tone in Dublin in 1763. He was a lawyer, a writer and a revolutionary leader who is widely regarded as the father of Irish republicanism.

In 1798, Wolfe Tone and his allies attempted to stage a nationwide uprising, but it was largely unsuccessful due to poor organisation, lack of arms and effective repression by the British forces. Wolfe Tone himself was captured at sea while trying to land with a French expedition in Donegal. He died in prison from a self-inflicted wound on...

BRIDGING HISTORY WITH ENDURING CHARM OF GALWAY: Wolfe Tone bridge on Father Griffin Road in Galway spans the shortest yet fastest flowing river Corrib in Galway town. It links the Claddagh area with the city centre. The bridge was built in 1980 and has been named after Theobald Wolfe Tone, one of the revolutionaries of 1798 Irish Rebellion. We had striking views of Long Walk and the Spanish arch, together with the City Museum of Galway, standing on this bridge. The bridge is used both by pedestrians and by vehicles. A proud gem of...
