Tucked away in a quiet corner of Città Alta, just a short stroll from the bustling main streets, I found a shady bench near the Lavatoio di via Lupo—a beautifully preserved 19th-century washhouse that once served the people of Bergamo when homes lacked running water. It’s an unassuming spot, but full of character and quiet charm.

I sat there with a few delicious piadine from nearby Piadella, letting the cool stone surroundings and soft birdsong offer a break from the sun. The gentle rustling of leaves and the occasional footstep echoed softly around the marble basins, once filled from the underground cistern built in 1890. Antico Lavatoio is the long tank of white marble divided into different parts, covered by an elegant roof made of cast iron and metal slabs. It was built in 1881, the Washhouse (“Lavatoio” in Italian) via San Lupo, in the Upper Town, represents a beautiful model from the design point of view.
