La Chiesa di San Camillo dei Mercedari (nota come San Camillo de Lellis o San Camillo ai Crociferi), fu costruita sotto il patronato del vescovo Pietro Galletti, dopo il devastante terremoto del 1693, durante il rinnovamento urbanistico di Catania,

Il cantiere fu avviato nel 1723, sotto la direzione di un architetto camilliano, forse Domenico Barbera o Vincenzo Caffarelli o entrambi. Francesco Battaglia, fu direttore del cantiere tra il 1771 e il 1788.
