Dalla storia orgogliosa e travagliata, fu rasa al suolo dal terremoto del 1693 e costruita nel 1700 in stile barocco su progetto di Italia a pianta basilicale su tre navate. Nella ricostruzione si cambia il prospetto per affacciarla sulla nuova via principale dove Stefano Ittar disegna una facciata concavoconvessa su due ordini sopraelevandola su una scalinata e cingendola con un cancello. Elevata a regia basilica al pari della cappella Palatina di Palermo. Inserita nel patrimonio mondiale dell'umanità UNESCO, la bellissima chiesa oggi viene spesso usata per i matrimoni e custodisce all'interno una delle candelore che precedono il fercolo di Sant'Agata durante la processione. Pregevoli gli affreschi.
