It’s incredible that you can find such a treasure of archaeological significance tucked between the buildings of the city. Without the signs, it would be very easy to miss the entrance. The theatre itself is in excellent condition, and you can really sense its ancient majesty. I had never seen a Roman theatre with black tones before, which are caused by the use of lava stones. It’s a unique and striking detail. It’s truly surprising to see how this ancient Roman wonder has been used as the foundation for more modern houses, which now sit directly on top of it. The layers of history are visible all at once, and that contrast adds even more depth to the visit. What makes the experience even more special is the chance to see both the theatre and the odeon. It’s fascinating to observe the two separate structures and reflect on their different purposes. The theatre was used for comedies and dramas, while the odeon was intended for concerts. Overall, it’s a wonderful experience, and I definitely recommend a visit if you’re in Catania.

Sure it’s a bit unloved but some works are going on with the intention of cleaning it up? I imagine anyway. So the price, 8 euros is high if you’re going to run though the place in 5 minuets! I, however stayed about an hour exploring the place fully. I ran and climbed all over the odeon and other spaces and discovered new things and as there is only like two staff members at the front you’re free to run around as much as you’d like. Bring some food and sit in the sun and make the most of your ticket and the place. I saw some cute cats and even ones with kittens which is sad but they seemed to have food. If you spend the time well then it’s absolutely worth it.

An amazing piece of ancient history, well preserved for what it takes. The surrounding buildings look a bit like corals growing on the other species to me - they are organically merged with the amphitheatre. The place itself is full of information, the boards contain information in both Italian and English. The only issue I had with the site is the fact that it seems a bit like a work in progress- some parts of the amphitheatre are well restored whereas the others seem like an ordinary ruin. I recommend strolling alone through one of the corridors under the stands, to feel the awe of the history around - that was a cathartic experience for me.

Regular admission is €6 as of September 2023 and is well worth it, in my opinion. The Roman Theater was built in the 1st century CE over an existing Greek structure which dates from the 5th to 4th century BCE. The theatre was designed to accommodate about 7000 spectators in a semi-circle. After the end of the Roman Empire, much of the marble that decorated the theater was used to construct the Cattedrale di Sant’Agata, and other buildings were constructed over it. Excavation of the site began in the late 1700s and it is now used for occasional summer performances. There is also an Odeon on the site, with a capacity of about 1500 spectators.
