This monument was erected in 1935 to commemorate the soldiers from Trieste who fell during World War I. The bronze sculpture was created by Attilio Selva, while the white Istrian stone pedestal was designed by Enrico Del Debbio. The sculpture features three soldiers supporting a wounded comrade, with a fifth figure raising a round shield to protect them—symbolizing brotherhood, sacrifice, and protection. The pedestal bears the Latin inscription: 'Trieste / ai caduti / nella guerra di liberazione / MCMXV - MCMXVIII' ('Trieste / to the fallen / in the war of liberation / 1915–1918'). The phrase 'war of liberation' refers to World War I and reflects the view—promoted by the Fascist regime at the time—that Trieste’s annexation from the Austro-Hungarian Empire to Italy was an act of national liberation.

ENGLISH: It is a monument dedicated to the Trieste soldiers who fell during the First World War, and is located inside the Parco della Rimembranza, a few steps from the Cathedral of San Giusto Martire (on the Colle di San Giusto). Inaugurated on 30 August 1935, in front of King Vittorio Emanuele III, the sculptural group, a cast iron work by the sculptor Attilio Selva (from Trieste), rests directly on a beautiful base in white Istrian stone, designed by Enrico Del Debbio, architect of the Stadium dei Marmi and the Palazzo della Farnesina in Rome. Overall about 5 meters high, the sculpture depicts 5 male figures with classic shapes: 3 support a dying companion, the fifth man holds the round shield raised as a gesture of protection towards all the others. Other elements are the armor and a helmet, placed at the feet of the soldiers. The inscription reads: "Trieste, to the fallen in the war of liberation, MCMXV - MCMXVIII". The concept of 'war of liberation' aims to underline the previous belonging of the city to the Austro-Hungarian empire and the passage from the empire to Italy after the Great War.

A big war memorial and gardens and Roman ruins beside the castle. The statue on top is dramatic. The monument was conceived by the Trieste sculptor Attilio Selva , while the marble base is the work of the architect Enrico del Nebbio . The war memorial, in its classical style, depicts five figures at the center of a dramatic war scene. Three support a wounded comrade, while the fifth, with a shield, covers their backs. Overall, the sculpture is over five meters high; the statues are made of cast iron, while the base is made of white Istrian stone
