ブラタモリでも紹介された場所。熱海七湯の一つ「大湯間歇泉」は、古くからの間欠泉で世界的にも有名な自噴泉だった。坂の上の方に位置しており、間欠泉から出たお湯を木管を使って下にある各旅館に引いていた。当時は昼夜6回の激しい噴出があり、地面が揺れるようであったらしい。明治中頃から次第に減少し1923年に停止。現在は約5分毎に人工的に湯を噴出させ、往年の大湯噴出の様子を再現している。人工だと分かると少し興醒めしてしまった。

English: This geyser was a self-flowing spring that gained worldwide fame. Located on an elevated slope, the hot spring water from the geyser was channeled via wooden pipes to ryokans lower down the hill. In its heyday, the geyser erupted violently six times a day, reportedly causing the ground to tremble. However, the eruptions gradually decreased from the mid-Meiji period and ceased entirely in 1923. Today, hot water is artificially ejected approximately every five minutes to replicate the dramatic eruptions...

It was great to see this important historical geyser but I was sad that it is now operated by a pump. Volcanic activity and earthquake has caused it to not flow so a pump will make it go. Still very...
