Eishō-ji Temple — Attraction in Kamakura

Has a similar bamboo forest to Hōkokuji (also in Kamakura), though not as large, well-maintained, or as well-known. Only nunnery in Kamakura. Excellent for the retention of its original buildings, but this is not a must-visit temple if time is short. Preservation of the original structures lacks funding, as a proliferation of wood-boring insects in the support beams of the butsuden (closed to the public except for a small viewing hole through lattice) will demonstrate upon inspection; karamon, while original, is also not well-maintained. In short, a visit to Eishōji is neither essential nor particularly worthwhile for most travelers on budgets of time and money. Kamakura has plenty of other temples to which visits are more rewarding.

Tōkōzan Eishōji (founded 1636)

“Okaji no Kata (Eishoin), was a descendant of Ota Dokan, who built the original Edo Castle. An attendant of Tokugawa Ieyasu, she built the temple as a nunnery on the site of an old Dokan family mansion. Okaji no Kata was given the name Okatsu, (Lady of Victory), because he would win when she accompanied him into battle. “Okatsu no Kata became the foster mother to Tokugawa Yorifusa, the founder of the Mito Tokugawa clan. Generations of daughters from the Mito clan subsequently served as head nun. The temple became so highly ranked in the Edo period society that it became known as the ‘Mito Mansion’, and a three-leaved hollyhock, the family crest of the Tokugawa clan, was placed over the main gate. 9.英勝寺 全体の見どころ(寺院の雰囲気.境内の全体.史跡.四季.拝観注意事項 等) ・浄土宗のこの寺は、かって水戸徳川家につながる尼寺で、太田道灌の居館の地であったといわれています。今は鎌倉唯一の尼寺で、尼寺に相応しい佇まいを見せている寺です。 ・寛永20年(1636年)に創建された英勝寺の境内には、創建当時から現存する建物が数多く残っている。主要な建物である山門、仏殿、鐘楼、祠堂、祠堂門（唐門）は、すべて国の重要文化財に指定されていて、見どころは多い。 ・仏殿・唐門・祠堂・鐘楼などの建物とその周辺の花が絶えない庭園や見事な竹林の中庭などが拝観できます。 ・境内は、名木トウカエデや四季折々の花に恵まれ、早春のウメ・マンサク・ワビスケから初冬のヒイラギ・スイセン・ヤブツバキまで多彩で訪れる人々を魅了します。 ・境内は柵内の立ち入りが厳禁で、草花や苔を大切にして拝観して下さい。 ・ワビスケとトウカエデは樹齢三百年を越えると推定され、鎌倉市の天然記念物に指定されています。

英勝寺境内は拝観が可能で、午前９時より午後４時まで、拝観料３００円で公開されています。 ただし、法要などには拝観が中止されます。

見どころのポイント(総門・山門・参道・仏殿　等) (1).惣門（総門）は通常閉鎖されていますので、惣門の前から塀に沿って進み、通用門から境内に入ります。 (2).仏殿は、間口奥行きとも３間、屋根は寄棟、裳階(もこし)付の建物です。 ・軒(蟇股かえるまた)を飾る十二支の装飾彫刻が印象的です。 ・正面の小窓を開けると、本尊の阿弥陀三尊を拝することができます。 また、堂内の天井と周辺には、極楽を思わせる華麗な装飾が見られ、極彩色の鳥や天女の絵など、天井絵が華やかです。 水戸徳川家の三つ葉葵や太田家の桔梗の紋、鳳凰の絵などは、格式の高い尼寺の姿を伝えています。 ・仏殿内部には徳川家寄進の阿弥陀如来と、向かって右の観音菩薩と左の勢至菩薩を本尊として祀っています(徳川家光の寄進)。 ・仏殿には曼殊院良恕法親王の「宝珠殿」という額を掲げられ、この扁額の周囲の彫りに朱が塗られていたのが残っています。 ・入り口の扉の内側の引き落としの金具に蝉の形の金物があしらわれているのもあまり無いとのことです。(扉の蝉型の金具) ・内部の天井を支える柱は上下の端が丸くすぼまった形をして粽柱（ちまきばしら）とよばれていて、禅宗様の特徴のひとつだそうです。 その上部は淡い色から濃い色までを段階的に変化させて彩色する方法「繧繝彩色」（うんげんさいしき）という技法で鮮やかに彩られています。 国の重要文化財。

(3).山門は関東大震災によって倒壊したため、長らく私有地に移築されていましたが、 2007年より復興工事が行われ、2012年5月完成しました。 ・山門も仏殿と同様に反りがなく、まっすぐな葺き下ろしとなっています。銅板葺き屋根の直線的意匠は、英勝寺の建物に共通した特色です。 国の重要文化財。

(4).祠堂門(唐門)は祠堂と共に建てられたと見られ、小さいながら細工は精巧で、欄間のぼたんの彫り物などは、高度な技術を示しています。 国の重要文化財。

(5).祠堂(英勝院を祀る)は、徳川頼房によって建立されたとみられ、現在さや堂に覆われていますが、金色の柱や軒下の色彩の豊かさは、日光東照宮を思わせて見事です。 祠堂内部は、非公開です。 国の重要文化財。

(6).鐘楼 ・鐘楼は「袴腰」という格式の高い寺にしかみられない珍しい様式で、近世の鎌倉では 唯一ここだけのようです。「寛永２０年の林羅山撰文」の銘をもつ梵鐘があります。 国の重要文化財。

(7).書院および竹林 書院は、木々の中に静かに位置しています。心が癒されます。

阿仏尼卵塔 ・十六夜日記の作者、阿仏尼の墓と伝えられる。 もともと英勝寺境内だが、現在は英勝寺の塀を北鎌倉方面に越えた崖下のやぐら内にある。 なお、阿仏尼の息子である冷泉為相の墓は、近隣の浄光明寺境内にある。

We stopped by this temple as it was somewhat close by to Tsurugaoka Hachimangu for their bamboo forest and unique mountain-side perspective. The relative proximity between shrine and bamboo forest made it a quick travel with many opportunity for pictures.
