Just when you think Hasedera can’t top its massive Kannon statue, mossy gardens & rabbit-warren paths, you stumble into the lookout tucked beside the Kannon Museum. From here, Kamakura stretches out like a watercolor: tiled rooftops, bamboo swaying in the foreground & the coastline melting into the horizon. On a clear day, you’d swear you could see straight to your next bad decision on Enoshima Island.

It’s not a huge viewing platform, more of a pause in the temple’s flow, but that’s the charm. The space forces you to stop, breathe, & take in the fact that this seaside town once housed samurai, & now it’s a mash-up of surfers, shrines & Starbucks.

If you’re already in Hasedera (and you should be) don’t skip this stop. It’s a reminder that Kamakura isn’t just history underfoot, it’s also beauty...
