Bonchi Kyoto is an adorable, creative, rewarding, delightful, and absolutely wonderful experience!
We were visiting from the U.S. and were looking for a fun activity for the four kids in our group (ages 8, 9, 10, 11 year olds). I found Bonchi while searching on Google Maps. Their website had all the information we needed and we were able to easily book our appointment.
We were a tad nervous about the length of time needed to complete the miniature food items and if our kids would have enough patience. Not only did they have enough patience, they wanted to make more!
The kids were engaged the entire time, and owners and instructors, Mayuka and Takanori were incredibly kind and patient. Mayuka spoke English very well and the kids were able to follow every step. They were so proud of what they were able to create and how realistic it looked.
The adorable space is conveniently located and the setup is perfect to accommodate a small group of 1-5. We had four children participating and two adults observing. The class took about 3 hours.
I recommend this class to anyone looking for something fun and unique to do while in Kyoto, while also creating a...
Read moreWe had an absolutely AMAZING experience creating our very own miniature food replicas at Bonchi Tiny Food Lessons! From beginning to end, everything was beyond wonderful - from meeting Mayuka (our gracious host/teacher!) and getting a brief history of food replica culture in Japan, to choosing what we would make, to being treated to a mini-photoshoot with our final creations… just wow! Mayuka’s passion for food replica culture is palpable; learning from her truly feels like an honor! She is also very warm, thoughtful, and kind - she encourages you every step of the way while serving you tea and making lovely conversation. Mayuka was particularly helpful and patient with our 9-year old son; she truly guided him through the process and he was positively beaming when he finished his miniature hotpot! All of our food replicas turned out great and are proudly displayed in our home - the most unique souvenir we have ever brought back from a vacation. Our Bonchi Tiny Food Lesson definitely ranks in our top Japan experiences of all time! It is an absolute MUST experience if you’re...
Read moreExceptional experience in Kyoto 10/10, 5+ stars, Super Amazing! Mayuka-San and Takanori-San were wonderful teachers and hosts. We enjoyed learning about the history and art-form behind Japanese faux foods used in restaurant displays. It was super neat to hear Mayuka-San's story and learn how Japanese wax foods inspired her to create miniature foods with air dry clay. This class/experience was a pinnacle moment of our time in Kyoto. I would recommend this class to anyone that enjoys tiny things (miniatures) and is looking for a fun way to spend a morning or afternoon in Kyoto. I would definitely come back and make more mini food items!! Mayuka-San made it very approachable and easy to understand. A note on the location: Please refer to the instructions as the location can be hard to find. Inside the space is cozy and filled with interesting tidbits about Kyoto's landscape and various neighborhoods. We especially enjoyed the music that was played...
