Responds to our email in a timely manner and very accommodating: we had a lot of changes in our booking due to uncontrolled events but Nori, the owner, were able to accommodate our requests and he even gave options for us to have a nice and affordable stay. ||+ Very clear direction on how to access the guest house ||+ Very good location: there's a lot of restaurants, convenience stores and tourist areas nearby. Nearest bus stop is 4-minute walk and nearest train station is 8-minute walk. However, if you have a JR pass and don't want to spend extra for a local subway, the nearest JR station is 19-minute walk. ||+ A very homey ambiance. There's a common area where you can eat, drink coffee/tea, read (there's a lot of books and magazines!) or socialize with other guests. I love the feet heater under the dining table. There's also kitchen utensils, microwave and refrigerator. ||+ Free wifi ||+ Free coffee and tea and sometimes, free fruits :) ||+ All areas are very clean ||+ Free tourist map plus suggestions from Nori :) ||+ The website contains clear information about the guest house||- Reception is open during these times only: 8am-11am and 4pm-9pm. We came from Osaka and plan to drop our luggage since check-in time is not yet available. We were not able to make it before 11am but we decided to try our luck since we don't want go around with our luggage and we don't want to pay extra for locker in the station. After trying the doorbell several times and waiting for a few minutes, we decided to just leave our luggage outside the guest house and just leave an email to the staff. Good thing, when we're about to leave, the door opened and Nori let us in (he was taking a bath when we rand the doorbell. Haha!) Since the room is already available, he processed our check-in. ||||Overall, I'll recommend this guest house and will definitely book this again when...

Read moreI had a wonderful stay at Guesthouse Hitsujian 18 months ago, and when I was planning a trip to Japan this year, the first thing I did was to book here again!||We had a private room, with beautiful old wooden walls and tatami and sliding screen doors - it's lovely to stay in a real old house in Kyoto.||All the facilities are very comfortable and clean. The host, Nori-san, is great at making everyone feel at home and giving advice on what to see and do, and has even prepared an extremely useful map of local restaurants - which takes a lot of the trouble out of finding somewhere to eat when you don't know Japanese!||I've been recommending Guesthouse Hitsujian to everyone I met on the rest of my travels...
