Kuraya Hashimoto — Local services in Kyoto

I first came to this store in 2001 on my 1st trip to Japan. I was touring the nearby castle (Nijo-jo) and stopped in to look around, having an interest in swords. The lady shopkeeper was busy with another customer and the store is very small. I resolved to come back when they were less busy. I did come back later in the afternoon and the shopkeeper recognized me and offered me some tea. We sat for a while and chatted, as best as we could since I only know a few Japanese words, and they a few English words. We spoke of Fuji-san and it was the best conversation I had in Japan that trip. I bought a Wakazashi replica and have it proudly displayed. My 2nd trip I bought a Katana replica. And my third trip a Tanto. I now display all three very proudly. If you are near to the castle, drop in and see the shop. I recommend it highly....

Stumbled upon this shop when I was visiting Nijo Castle. I was looking to purchase a Katana during my trip and was having trouble deciding where to buy it when I came across this store. I did have to return to make a reservation, but when it was my turn, Junko was very hospitable and took their time to show me the different variations of Katanas they had on display. They spoke and understood enough english for us to communicate well enough and the experience was very pleasant.

I ended up purchasing one of the replica katanas and I was blown away by the care and thoughtfulness in packaging the item and showing me how to care for it.

I highly recommend anyone to come and visit and will definitely be returning here on my next...

I had heard about this store through a quick google search. Upon arriving, I saw a reservation required sign, waited a little bit and was accepted warmly into the shop regardless. I was immediately greeted and shown a variety of swords, both display and antique, all extremely detailed and well kept. Mrs. Hashimoto guided me through the different swords, how to maintain them, and answered all my questions. I ended up buying an antique wakizashi that has been amazingly well kept all these years. I whole heartedly recommend this store to anyone looking to buy a piece for their collection or decoration, and if given the chance would visit the store again just to say hello to both the shop keepers....
