My favorite restaurant in Kyoto. Bengaraya's speciality is oden, various foods (egg, daikon, tofu) simmered in a light broth. Perhaps most visitors to Japan don't know about oden but it's delicious, healthy, cheap, and unpretentious. From the menu I'd recommend the "rolled cabbage" oden, and "yaki gyu-suji" (grilled beef tendons).
Bengaraya is in Fushimi Ward which is a bit far away from Kyoto station, but within a 10-15 minute walk from three train stations. Fushimi Ward is also famous for it's sake production and Gekkeikan has its headquarters and museum here. You could visit the restaurant after visiting Fushimi Inari shrine or checking out some of the local sake breweries.
Here's the downside. It's hard to get in here. Forget about just walking in, I'd reserve the place at least a week before or hopefully earlier. Also, I'm not sure if you could make the reservation in English but perhaps you could have a Japanese-speaking friend or hotel staff make the reservation for you.
