Gion-Shirakawa Viewpoint — Attraction in Kyoto

Shirakawa (白川) Lane in Gion district is a truly popular and well known sightseeing spot amongst locals and tourists alike. It is often known as the most beautiful street in Kyoto. The Lane is just a few minutes walk from Hanamichi area, which is always packed with tourists. Shirakawa Lane provides a serene haven for people who like to take a break from the huzzling main shopping and dining hub. The Lane is perfect for those who would like to indulge themselves with plentiful of culinary options.

Gion Shirakawa is beautiful at any time of the year especially at cherry blossom season. However it will be packed with cherry blossoms watching crowds in April and this may spoil the appeal of this charming Lane.

When you walk in this area, you will feel as if you were entering into a serene paradise . The Lane is filled with traditional old wooden houses, stone bridges, cherry and willow trees and a small canal. Numerous fanciful restaurants and bars lined one side of the canal whilst cherry blossoms trees, willows trees and Japanese maple trees lined the other side. I feel that they are perfectly complimented each other in this magnificent paradise. It is especially charismatic to watch the willow trees swaying elegantly in the gentle breeze.

You may find Shirakawa Lane is especially captivating and alluring at sunset. The red lanterns and warm light radiating from the restaurants is so mesmerizing whilst the burbling sound of the canal casts more flare to the already romantic atmosphere.

Some tips for visitors: don’t miss out the chance of taking nice instagrammable photos at the old stone bridge crosses the canal. Many couples dressed in beautiful kimono taking photos at this picturesque bridge. If you are in Kyoto, you cannot miss this place. We visited this place for two days.. this is actual Kyoto which you will fall in love… especially this lane because of its view… go around 4pm and stay till 5pm… walk around take snaps, you can see old houses of Kyoto, water stream right next to street.. there are few houses where you would like to capture them. We went in October end and it was Autumn and it was a great view, it will become better in November… just walk around parallel roads of Shirakawa and you can find multiple restaurants… some are exotic, some are street food type, few of them you need to wait in queue for long time.. don’t miss out to try their Udon Noodles.

You can also encounter Geishas in this area when you are walking towards this street, they can be seen during evening hours. I could spot two or three of them, you feel you are in old Japan movies. There are few shops who don’t welcome tourists, watch the sign before you enter them in this area. They have reserved it for local Kyoto people.
