京都府立図書館は、日本で最初の公立図書館「集書院」を源流として、明治31(1898)年に、京都御苑内に設立されました。 現在の場所には、明治42(1909)年に移転しました。 平成7(1995)年の阪神・淡路大震災により建物が大きく損傷したため、平成13(2001)年に地上4階地下2階建の新館に建て替わりました。

建物の特徴 現在の場所に移転した当時の建物(旧館)の設計者は、建築家で図案研究も行っていた武田五一(たけだ ごいち 1872~1938年)です。 レンガ造3階建で、閲覧室のほか、展覧会や講演会を行える陳列室がありました。 フランス・ルネサンス風のクラッシックな様式ですが、あえてあっさりした平面的なデザインにしています。 新館に建て替えるときに、外壁正面部のみ保存しましたので、明治期の面影を残しています。

Brief History The Kyoto Prefectural Library was established in 1898 in Kyoto Gyoen National Garden, originating from Japan's first public library, Shushoin. It moved to its current location in 1909. The building was severely damaged in the Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake in 1995, and was replaced in 2001 with a new building with four stories above ground and two below.

Characteristics of the building The designer of the old building, which was then moved to its current location, was Takeda Goichi (1872-1938), an architect and designer. The three-story brick building had a reading room and a display room where exhibitions and lectures could be held. It is a classic French Renaissance-style building, but it has a simple, flat design. 1909年明治の終わり頃に建てられた建築。関西の近代建築の父である武田五一の設計である。この建築ではバットレス(飛びて出ている所)が柱の用に太く配列され楕円のペディメントもあるので古典主義ぽくはあるもののカラーリングやアーチを見るとセセッションでまとめてあるそう。だが細部を見ると通気口のデザインに蝶、玄関の上部には植物文様が掘られておりアール・ヌーヴォーの気概も感じられる。 テラコッタが日本で最初に使われたのがこの建築である。 この建築は正面のみ保存(ファザード保存)されており後ろ側は存在していない。内部も装飾はなくスキーっとしている。その上移築である。左右両端部も階段付近以外は復元である。全体的にも復元の気が強い。だから近代建築かと言われると違うといわれるかもしれない。 ではなぜこうなったのか。 1995年1月17日阪神淡路大震災により建物が損壊したためである。建築をよく見ると欠けている部分もあり被害を見ることができる。 対象以前の近代建築を地震から守ることの難しさを痛感する。これは想像だが京都府民の方々や専門家の方々が尽力して頂いたのであろう。 過去から今へ形を変えて受け継がれた建築。そこには何万人もの思い出がある。 私達はその思い出の一つにもなるし思い出が風化されないように受け継...
