Rozanji Temple is closely associoated with an author of Lady Murasaki and The Tale of Genji who served at Imperial Palace and wrote the first poem in the history of Japanese literature. It was her farther Fujiwara Kanesuke who was a court official built his mansion in this place. It is said this is the very place where Murasaki Shikibu wrote her great works as it is depicted on some stone monument standing in this temple. The temple was originally established in 938 on the hill side of Mt. Funaoka in Nishijin area and moved to the current location to escape the destruction by the great warlord Oda Nobunaga in the late 16th century.
