Saga Toriimoto Preserved Street is a real gem in Kyoto. Walking through this historic street feels like stepping back in time. Traditional wooden houses, small shops and tea houses give the area a very special charm. It is much quieter than the very touristy areas, perfect for getting to know Kyoto from a more authentic side. It is particularly nice to simply stroll through the street without a fixed destination, admire the architecture and soak up the relaxed atmosphere. Personally I don't really get the reviews praising this place. It's kinda just more Gion but pretty far out of the way unless you're trying to visit some of the shrines in the region. There really isn't much open in terms of shops and restaurants in the area either. I don't feel like it's as preserved as the name says it is, with taxis and trucks constantly trying to pass you on the street.

The only thing I could see that this has over Gion is that it hasn't become so overwhelmed with tourists that they banned...

MUST DO AND SEE IN KYOTO FOR ME

Take the bus (or if you're feeling adventurous, walk) to Otagi Nenbutsu Ji Temple. Then, descend the entire length of this street, far from the tourist masses, surrounded by nature and traditional machiya houses. Along the way, make a stop at Adashino Nenbutsu Ji for its bamboo forest. Continue your journey down to the Arashiyama bamboo forest or all the way to the city center.
