Saga Toriimoto Preserved Street is a real gem in Kyoto. Walking through this historic street feels like stepping back in time. Traditional wooden houses, small shops and tea houses give the area a very special charm. Read morePersonally I don't really get the reviews praising this place. It's kinda just more Gion but pretty far out of the way unless you're trying to visit some of the shrines in the region. There really isn't much open in terms of shops and restaurants in the area either. I don't feel like it's as preserved as the name says it is, with taxis and trucks constantly trying to pass you on the street.
The only thing I could see that this has over Gion is that it hasn't become so overwhelmed with tourists that they banned...
