This is the type of place you would want to include in a Journey, but not make it the key part of it. If you are walking around in Arashiyama, it's worth coming here. There is this temple and another right next door. The other one is famous because of the moss garden, but it's also full of people. This one doesn't have anything fancy, but not too many people come here. It's an ideal resting place, it's quite and cool. Come here to take a break, sit and enjoy the surrounding vegetation. When we were there it was only us, we had the whole place to...

I accidentally discovered this place and how happy I am. It is not a typical tourist attraction. A mossy garden with a hidden temple. Even some of my Japanese hosts didn't know about it. Not shiny and fancy but this place definitely has some magic in it. Was there meditating a long time. No one turned up. Ideal place if you want to be alone with...

Small place with a beautiful moss garden and maple trees that turn colour in autumn! It’s one of the cheaper and less crowded places in Kyoto, like many temples in the area. It might not be as splendid and big as other ones but if you’re nearby or on a budget and still want to visit a pretty garden this might be a...

One of the most peaceful temples in Kyoto. It's just a few extra steps up from Giōji temple but almost no one comes here. We sat on the edge of the temple to appreciate the peacefulness, the sound of the birds and the bamboo forest for a good 15 minutes and saw no one. Definitely worth a visit. 300¥ entrance fee.
