I did a bit of reading about it's history before we visited. We arrived early morning, from Osaka, in order to avoid the crowd. We were greeted with quite a number of deers roaming around the whole area. The temple itself is immense - it is said to be the largest wooden structure in the world until it got superseded. Inside were 2 giant Buddhas and 2 pairs of giants guardians (as shown in my pictures). Inside, there are 2 souvenir shops. This place's proximity to Osaka makes it a must visit, even a quick one. And again, come early morning before hoards of tourists arrive.

Truly a breathtaking view. One of the largest buildings made from wood, and the bronze gold-plated Buddha statue inside was a sight to see. I wondered how much math it took to architect a building that stands so majestically. Queue to get in was not long and price was worth it. Control of foot traffic was well done for the number of people visiting. Go and be ready to feel amazed.

The octagonal lantern is located in front of the main hall or the Great Buddha Hall. Tōdai-ji was established 1300 years ago, assessed the World Heritage Site by UNESCO, and is the world's largest wooden building currently. The octagonal lantern is made of copper and is very elegant. There are many beautiful carvings on the lantern, such as goddess playing the fluet. It is said that the history of the octagonal lantern is much longer than that of the main hall, and one of the eight sides was stolen, so the stolen side was later reduplicated and installed on the lantern. So, if you have the opportunity to visit Tōdai-ji, take a closer look at the lantern, maybe you will find the side which was ever been stolen!
