Universal City is a free shopping/restaurant area outside the entrance of Universal Studios Osaka. You can reach it either by JR (Japan Rail) line trains which is free with a JR Pass if you're touring (and remembered to buy your pass in advance) OR you can take a ferry from Osaka Port if you're visiting the aquarium/Tempozan first.

Universal City itself is free to browse around in with all variety of shops and restaurants from around the world. There is an arcade and a few hotels as well. The air is filled with excitement as you walk around; music from Universal films are in the background, and cute characters from different shows and movies are placed here and there.

Even if you don't plan on entering the theme park I highly recommend paying the place a visit! It's a highlight...

Universal Park, if you have been to LA and Orlando, it's the same, but you will see some Japanese touches. Live shows such as the 4D Connor show won't be recommended to international people as no English translations are available, but you can enjoy thrill rides for sure, which we did. Like all parks, long lines, so we had to take 2 day pass.

I also find Donkey King and the whole Nintendo World overhyped (which requires you in the official app to go in the morning and get e-tickets for specific slots, and then they check the QR code to let you enter in). It may be good for young kids but with teenagers, it wasn't worth it. There are 2 rides, one of which is worth a 3-hour line!
