「行人坂」といえば、江戸期の2つの火事に縁がある。 天和の大火、またの名をお七火事（天和2／1683年）と、明和の大火、またの名を目黒行人坂の大火（明和9／1772年）だ。 前者では、放火犯となった八百屋お七ちゃんの恋人の寺小姓吉三、後の西運上人の墓が坂の途中の大圓寺にある（異説あり）という縁であり、後者では、その大圓寺が無宿者の不良坊主によって放火され、江戸を焼き尽くす火元となった、という縁である。
