One Hundred Steps Staircase — Attraction in Tokyo

東京都指定有形文化財「百段階段」へ行って来ました。

「百段階段」は目黒雅叙園で現存する唯一の木造建築で、斜面に沿って建てられた、豪華で美しい装飾が施された［7部屋］を99段の階段廊下で繋いでいます。

この7つのお部屋が凄いのです。

十畝（じっぽ）の間 絵を手掛けた画家・荒木十畝にちなみ名付けられました。 格子状の天井、文様があしらわれた組子の障子、床柱、螺鈿や多くの七宝焼が美しいお部屋です。

漁礁（ぎょしょう）の間 床柱に彫られた中国の画題「漁礁問答」に由来しています。 左右、全て対となっている床柱は、ともに樹齢300年の檜で、1本の木から彫り出して作られています。彫刻が見所のお部屋です。

草丘（そうきゅう）の間 風景画を得意とした礒部草丘が手掛けた絵が飾られています。 ダイナミックに仕切られた天井画や欄間の草丘の絵、渡り廊下と相俟ってパノラマのように美しく、貴重な柱の材木も見所のお部屋です。

静水（せいすい）の間 画家・橋本静水の名前から「静水の間」と呼ばれていますが、全部で5人の画家が携わっています。 床柱の節が渋くてとても格好良かったです。 雅叙園といえば、やっぱり中国料理のイメージがありますが、当時の晴れやかな宴の様子が窺えるような円形のテーブルや、新聞広告等が展示されていました。

星光（せいこう）の間 画家・板倉星光によって、四季の恵み、四季の花が描かれています。 ここは他に比べ天井が低いのですが、欄間絵の縦幅を短く、四隅を丸く、柱も丸い木を使用したり等、工夫で圧迫感を感じずに、華やかなのに落ち着くお部屋でした。

清方の間 このお部屋の絵は、明治期から昭和期に掛けての浮世絵師・日本画家・随筆家でもある鏑木清方が手掛けました。 清方の真骨頂である美人画、目黒の地を好んだという目黒の風景や名産品、歌舞伎役者が描かれ、網目状の天井、複雑な文様の障子、廊下の手すりの細工と、一際、繊細な茶室風の造りになっています。

頂上の間 西村五雲に依頼していたものの、描く前に他界、松岡映丘門下数人の画家により天井画が描かれたお部屋です。床柱は黒柿が用いられています。

階段が99段なのは諸説あるそうです。

「奇数は陽数であり、縁起が良い数だから」 その縁起の良い奇数の中で、これ以上ない大きな数を重ねた説。

「未完の美学。完璧な数字より発展性のある数字を」 100という完璧な数字から1を引いて、まだ良くなる余地を残した説。 日本家屋には人目につかない場所にあえて未完の場所を作るという“験担ぎ”もあったそう。 未完性の美しさ、こちらの説が大好きです。

各部屋それぞれ趣向が異なり、超絶技巧と美意識の集結で、今回、首が痛くなるほど、かなり丹念に眺めて堪能しました。

階段下にはショップがあるので、お土産を買うのに良いでしょう。

螺鈿を使った綺麗なお箸や、美しい組子細工の鳥居付きお札飾りや御朱印帳、可愛い水引細工等、他にも素敵なもの...

We saw the exhibit on September 22, 2024. If you buy tickets online instead of in person you will save ¥100. The staircases arent as bad as you are assuming but the rooms do get very crowded. Not the best for elderly or kids who have a hard time walking. I think overall it was neat but a bit overpriced and too crowded to take photos or enjoy the art peacefully.
