Read moreIt costs €8 to go in and pray at this place that doesn't really seem to operate as a church anymore. It's around €15 to go up. OVERALL: Don't recommend, there's far better places to see similar views. You're no longer allowed to take any photos or video of any aspect of the church. You're allowed to take photo's if you pay more to go upstairs to the roof to look out over the city. There's 3 steep flights of stairs you have to go up before you get to the lift to access the very top roof area. It's very crowded up there with many people unable to see out. There are areas that would be beautiful to see the church from internally upstairs, however they're all closed off and you have to book and pay for an event to get access to them?! There's a staff member who is stuck in the lift and begrudgingly collects your ticket (it seems backwards to do it this way). Staff stand in the church speaking loudly among themselves, they didn't assist with directions on where the stairs were at all, nor did they have/know anything about the church. They were rude to passers by. An absolute money maker with zero heart, care etc. The building is eroding in many places and it appears to be running as a tourist business, not a church these days. Very sad state of affairs.
Other great alternatives: Panorama Riga Observation Deck in the Academy of Sciences building, the Skyline bar at the Radisson Blu Latvija Conference hotel and if you're a small group you can get a guided tour that's highly recommended from the 360° view at...
Read moreSt. Peter's Church in Riga is an absolute must-see when visiting Latvia's beautiful capital. This medieval masterpiece stands as a proud sentinel in Riga's UNESCO-listed Old Town, offering both spiritual significance and architectural magnificence.
The church's iconic tower dominates Riga's skyline, and the elevator ride to the observation deck rewards visitors with breathtaking panoramic views of the entire city and beyond. I was particularly struck by how the red rooftops of the Old Town contrast with the modern city and the glimmering Daugava River.
Inside, the soaring Gothic interior creates an atmosphere of peaceful contemplation. The church also frequently hosts high-quality art exhibitions and musical performances that showcase Latvia's rich cultural heritage.
The staff are knowledgeable and friendly, happy to share the fascinating history of this landmark that dates back to the 13th century. Despite being damaged multiple times throughout history (including during WWII), the careful restoration work has preserved its historical significance while making it accessible to modern visitors.
