This restaurant was a hoot! Fantastic experience. We were really struggling to find places we wanted to try as vegetarians in Riga and after looking at the menu online here we gave it a try (lots of recommendations for vegetarians if you go out into the newer part of the city but we were exhausted and wanted to stay close to the hotel). We walked in without reservations which was fine, but apparently construction down the street had just cut off their water entirely so we were the last guests they let in and turned others away. So this was not a usual day for them but they were 150% service wise to make this a great experience for us. The server dashed off to pull the last water out of the coffee machine to make us a pot of water, which was super sweet of her. They did tell us we could only do appetizers, as they couldn't boil pasta, which had been our main draw. But we did three of the appetizers and they were great! The friendliness and fun of the experience, a luxurious pace as they slowly emptied out from the lunch hour, and even some guy coming in to film a few minutes for his tv show or whatever. All made for a fun and relaxed experience. After a local tea blend was delivered (very nice) they served us a carrot mousse to start with and bread with three flavored butters (these were all on the house and a nice welcome!). then we ordered the salmon rosti for me (delicious!), a caramelized goat cheese salad, also delicious, and some kind of cabbage salad with tofu for my friend. We ordered the seasonal ice cream flavors for dessert and. they were delicious as promised. Overall a fantastic experience and I highly recommend heading in for what should be delightful on a normal day!

We walked into this restaurant on a Monday: fully booked. Made a reservation for the following evening, and we're glad we did. The restaurant breathes a nice local vibe. Staff are quick to respond and very professional (to a point that it's almost too business-like). We were quickly seated and served the water we ordered, and after a brief perusing of the wine list, we ordered a tasty Chablis and a similar Vinho Verde. The restaurant does not offer many wines by the glass, but they have enough to offer ample choice. A good-looking and tasty amuse bouche was served on a nice wooden board, followed by a bread basket and homemade butters. We ordered steak tartare and the salmon-potato rosti's as starters, and they were delicious. Plenty of texture and flavour, and the dishes looked great on a plate. For a main, we ordered the catfish and the lamb shank, which were both incredibly well cooked. The lamb fell off the bone and the vegetables were cooked to perfection. It was also appreciated that the waiter advised a different red wine than initially ordered with the lamb, because he said it would match the lamb better (he was right; the wine matched very well and it was a good change). The Pavlova we ordered for dessert was excellent too; a perfect mix of sweet (the sugar and whipped cream), tart (the fruit sauce) and sour (the fruit). The total bill for water, six glasses of wine and all the food was under €130 for two people, which is great value for the experience and the quality of the dinner. We would recommend this place for sure if you're looking for a very nice evening out, with some great food and professional service.

Right in the heart of Riga’s bustling center, I found myself at a restaurant that seemed to have all the hallmarks of a classic tourist trap. But, surprise! It turned out to be a pretty pleasant spot after all. First off, don’t expect a quick in-and-out experience here. The wait time can be a bit lengthy, so pack your patience. And if you’re hoping to enjoy an aperitif while waiting for a table, you might be out of luck – the waiting area isn’t exactly designed for leisurely sipping. But once you're seated, the atmosphere is quite nice. The ambiance strikes a good balance, making it a cozy place to relax after a day of exploring Riga. It’s not the crème de la crème of the city's dining scene, but it’s far from disappointing. The menu has its highlights, especially for vegetarians. The pear with Gorgonzola? Absolutely divine! It’s a must-try for those who enjoy a good veggie dish. The flavors are rich and satisfying, making it a standout in an otherwise touristy lineup. All in all, while it may not top the list of Riga’s best restaurants, it’s definitely a charming spot to grab a bite. Among the many tourist-oriented eateries in the center, this one holds its own. Worth a visit if you’re in the area and looking for a pleasant dining experience.

Probably the best food I've had all year! I had been hunting around for a really nice restaurant in Riga old town for a while before my trip and kept coming back to this place so I knew I had to come here. Very luckily managed to get a seat for 5, I recommend booking beforehand as we were the last unreserved table. The food was perfect, for starters I had beef tartare, which was so good I think I would be scared to try it anywhere else in case it's not as good. My main dish was another dish I had never had before, catfish. The catfish melted in my mouth and is something I would definitely look for again (you don't see it often in the UK). Other mains tempted me but I couldn't resist a really great piece of fish. My dessert was a selection of homemade ice creams. Raspberry, Redberry, and Sea Buckthorn, again I tried this as I've never had sea buckthorn before. To my surprise the sea buckthorn was my favourite of the three ice creams. Probably slightly more expensive than the majority of the restaurants in the area, but it's really worth the price. I wish I came back here again before the end of my trip, however if I return to Riga in the future, I'll be sure to make a return to Pētergailis.

If you're looking to immerse yourself in the authentic flavors of Latvia, look no further than Petergailis in Riga. This gem of a restaurant serves up traditional dishes crafted from the finest local ingredients, showcasing the rich culinary heritage of the region. From the first bite, it's clear that Petergailis takes pride in its offerings. The menu is a delightful journey through Latvian cuisine, with local delicacies that are both comforting and sophisticated. Each dish is a testament to the country's vibrant food culture, prepared with care and attention to detail. Our dining experience was elevated by our waiter, Roman, whose dedication and hard work did not go unnoticed. Roman's service was impeccable, providing insightful recommendations and ensuring that our meal was nothing short of exceptional. His warmth and professionalism added a personal touch that made our visit truly memorable. For those seeking an authentic taste of Latvia, Petergailis is a must-visit. And a special thank you to Roman for making our evening unforgettable.

Extraordinary Chinese food. Very warm, kind and careful service. The waitress was so warm-hearted and always with a smile on her face. All these details made me feel like home. Why I’m writing all about a Chinese restaurant in this review of a Latvian restaurant? Let me explain: I didn’t see any information about this Latvian restaurant that says a reservation will be needed, so I went there directly and was told at the entrance by the waiter (a mature one) that I need to reserve a table. The point is, the waiter was extremely unfriendly, with a serial-killer expression on his face and said in an impatient way, like I was a trespasser or something and if I stayed for one more second he would call the police. That ruined my mood for a Latvian dinner so I turned to the Chinese restaurant mentioned above. I mean, I feel so sorry for interrupting your palace banquet without a reservation, but man you could say it nicely when it’s not a serious problem. That waiter should learn from the Chinese restaurant how to be polite to your customers.
