Ieva Simonaitytė Public Library — Attraction in Klaipėda

Library - House at Herkaus Manto st. 20 was built in 1781. The original purpose of the building was a shelter-hospital where 10-12 poor people lived. The house is one-story, only the central part is two-story. 19th century in the middle, the shelter already had seven living rooms and several more rooms for treatment. 20th century Ave. a teacher's seminary started operating in the house. 1920 in this building, Liepojos gatvė 36 (German Libauer Str. 36, now Herkaus Manto g. 20), the Klaipėda city public library began to operate. The establishment of a modern library meeting the needs of society required significant funds. Klaipėda citizens and Klaipėda institutions actively donated to the new city library. In the year of establishment, the library was called Land und Stadtbibliothek Memel, later Stadtbücherei Memel, and from 1923 Klaipėda City Bookstore.
