The calling card of not only Trakai but also Lithuania) Must visit 💯 This is a combination of heroic history and marvellous landscape around the castle. Trakai History Museum has various exhibitions, permanent expositions, well-kept courtyard and beautiful surrounding area. The Gothic castle of the island is one of the most famous and best-preserved castle in Lithuania. It was not built all at once - there were several phases if construction the castle. Trakai castle was known as a defensive fortress, a ducal palace, the main residence of Vytautas the Great and other Lithuanian rulers, and also as a prison. It was partially destroyed in 17th century but the castle was rebuilt in 20th century. The museum was established in 1962. It is quite a good idea to book a tour here or download the app at the ticket entrance. The prominent ducal palace is a great example of typical Gothic medieval castle, incorporating elements of the Romanesque style. There are interesting expositions of the Trakai History Museum which tell the history of Trakai and the castle. Some of expositions are devoted to the everyday life of Trakai people, Karaims and Tatars. Trakai History Museum's collection are really impressive. It will take at least two hours to observe all exposition here.

This is a lovely castle and certainly worth a visit if you are staying in Vilnius or surrounding area. It makes a great day out. There is ample parking in the town and the castle is an easy walk. All the usual tourist souvenir shops are on the way. The castle is in excellent condition and has a large number of exhibits from around the area over the centuries. This are arranged in the rooms, mainly in the main keep. They cover different periods in the castle’s history. You can walk all around the castle, both around the outside and within. You can even rent a boat and go right round the outside. Some of the views across the lake are really nice, though there is nothing that really stands out. The gift shop is really good and actually cheaper than many of the market stalls in the village. I would certainly recommend a visit.

This gets a 3/5.... almost 2/5... where to start. At first sight this looks beautiful and then you wonder why the use of all the red bricks and you are later told why, but then think, why not just stop the decay or rebuild slower using materials closer to the original materials if Trakai is as important as stated.. But that is just the smaller issues. The bigger issues are the usage of the castle as exhibition in general of random Trakai collections... or presenting random stuff without any explanations... often I stood wondering: what am I looking at? And why am I looking at it? The service people in the castle are not really providing any service but just busy with their phones... and in general it all has this 'tourist trap' feeling all over it There are much nicer castles in Baltikum than this... And while they might be of lesser historical importance and/or have lesser nobles visiting them, those other castles are far more interesting to visit and learn from than Trakai island castle

One of my favorite places on planet earth. Trakai and the castle of Trakai are both charming and breathtaking. Lots of great souvenir shops along the walk as well. Be sure to have Kibinai while you’re there and also check out the restaurants nearby to enjoy a glass of your favorite adult beverage while staring at this beautiful monument. The castle is an absolute must tour if you are staying within Vilnius but it is not to be confused; the island and castle are not in Vilnius, it is in Trakai. A mere 20-25 minute drive from downtown Vilnius. Trakai is a beautiful small town that deserves it’s own recognition.

AMAZING PLACE, I had no clue if the castle itself would be open since the instructions were very vague. But I decided to come anyway since I was eager to see this place with my own eyes. When I arrived I didn’t think that the entire lake was frozen. Oh my goodness it was such a beautiful site, one of the most lovely places I’ve ever seen. I was way too early and I was there completely on my own. Eventually at 10:00 the castle did open YES. It was beautiful inside with lots of rooms to explore. There wasn’t really a route which made the experience a little confusing. But absolutely worth coming here!

Visiting Trakai is worth it, since it is a beautiful village with great lake views and forest. You can take really nice pictures of the castle island and bridge, but I wouldn’t necessarily recommend spending 10€ (!!! So expensive!) to visit the interiors. From my point of view the visit isn’t well organised, neither is the scheme they give you. Not even a brochure with information or the recommended route is provided. The staff: not friendly. One of the towers is undergoing repairs, which forces you to climb temporary unstable scaffolding stairs. One of the exhibitions was not even working. 🤷🏽♀️
