Build in the beggining of the 16th century, the Bernardine church is dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi and to St. Bernard of Siena. With mixture of Gothic, Barouq and Renaissance features, the church is a must visit touristic attraction, especially as it is important history building for town ; the church was in 16th century even integrated in city defence walls, so in these days you can still find a shooting holes in some of the church walls. Otherwise the church itself is significantly bigger than nearby St. Anne's Church, but in no way so beautiful as its smaller neighbour. Stil you can find an interesting design on church outside and inside structure, while it is worth to mention that in present time (in year 2019) there are restoration work in progress inside church, so you will not be able to enjoy in all what is usually offering - it will be better, and nicer, when all restoration work will finish - you can ask for guided tour, as sometimes it can be available. The church is located close to the strickt town center, so from there you can walk just for a few minutes, while parking places can be found around, in neighbourhood. Because of stairs, placed at the church entrance, the access to church is more difficult for people with disabilities, and you can not find a public toilet or cash machines close to church either - also there is no bars or restaurants in immediate vicinity of church so you have to search for those (not so far) away from...

Kościół św. Franciszka z Asyżu został wzniesiony najprawdopodobniej w miejscu Krzywego Grodu, spalonego w 1390[1] w czasie litewskiej wojny domowej (1389–1392).

Rzeczypospolitej św. Jana Kapistrana (1453–1454). Kościół i 1500, gdyż groziły zawaleniem. W 1506 wznowiono prace budowlane, którymi kierował sprowadzony z Gdańska Michal Enkinger. Budowę świątyni wsparli Radziwiłłowie – wojewoda wileński Mikołaj, a później kardynał Jerzy.

Floriana),

Kaplica Pana Jezusa w Piwnicy.

Franciszka z Asyżu i św. Później został przeniesiony do kościoła św.

Odbudowę wsparł hojnie ówczesny wojewoda wileński i hetman wielki litewski Michał Kazimierz Pac. Przesklepiono wtedy kolebką prezbiterium. W 1690 zbudowano w kościele ambonę, a w XVIII w. 14 rokokowych ołtarzy z drewna klonowego, bogato ozdobionych rzeźbami. W podobnym stylu zbudowano konfesjonały, balustrady i obramowania portali.

W czasach I rozbioru Polski (1772) w klasztorze żyło 51 zakonników.

W 1794 kościół i klasztor ucierpiały podczas oblężenia i ostrzału Wilna przez Rosjan. Odbudowa świątyni doprowadziła do zmian w wyglądzie jej fasady. Otynkowano ją (wraz z całym kościołem) na czerwono.

W XIX wieku rosyjski architekt N. Czagin dobudował neogotycką dzwonnicę, nawiązującą do dekoracji pobliskiego kościoła św. Anny.

Zakonnicy zostali przeniesieni do Mohylewa i Kretyngi.

When the Bernardines, the traditional name for the Polish branch of the Franciscan Order, came to Vilnius in 1468, they founded a monastery here and built the first wooden church. The church, dedicated to St. Francis of Assyria and St. Bernardine of Siena, burned down in 1475 and the second church was (largely) destroyed by a flood. The so-called "Third Building" from 1512-1525 forms the basis for the current church and was built in brick Gothic. Wars and fires ravaged the church over the centuries, the church and monastery were part of the city walls, so that the Gothic appearance was supplemented with Renaissance and Baroque elements. The Church of St. Francis and St. Bernard (a.k.a. Bernardine Church) is a Roman Catholic Church in the Old Town of Vilnius. It is dedicated to Saint Francis of Assisi and Bernardino of Siena. The red brick church built at the end of the 15th century and consecrated in 1516, it’s is an important example of Gothic architecture in Lithuania. It is both an example of lathe gothic and brick Gothic architecture styles. During the passage of time it was severely damaged, thus the current look of the church at some point was finished with baroque style details. On the inside, it’s very simple, somewhat ascetic, but beautiful nevertheless. In my humble opinion, a must visit when in Vilnius.
