Read moreAs one of the landmarks of the city you’d be crazy not to pay a close up visit to this site. There’s a choice of routes up to the tower - either the funicular which costs a few Euros extra, or walking up the steep cobbled hill. The walking route is tough to begin with but soon turns into steps and a proper constructed path, but if uneven walking or steps are difficult then the funicular is the way to go.
Once at the top of the hill there’s a great view of the eastern part of the city. The tower itself and building work prevent a view over the Old Town but I’d recommend heading to the top of the tower to get the view. Upon entering I was directed to the ticket counter where a €5 fee got me a chance to climb to the top. You aren’t given the chance to climb before entering the ground floor and the direction of new visitors is controlled by the staff on the door.
There’s a gift shop on the ground floor and some displays on the floors up above. These are interesting but it’s clear most visitors are interested in the views from the windows, or wanting to reach the top of the stairs to the summit. The stairs themselves are steep and narrow and although the lack of control for people climbing and descending wasn’t great, there was enough width to let most crowds pass without too much issue.
Once at the top the view is as good as it gets of the city. It’s a true 360 degree perspective and the top of the castle is large enough to mean it’s not crowded, even during busy periods. With a perspective over the Old Town, the city to the north and the forest it’s easy to spend quite some time at the top admiring the views so fortunately there’s no limits on time etc. The descent down is a lot quicker and easier, but again it’s navigating the steep steps.
For the ticket price charged it’s a good value experience. Given that you’re free to spend as much time as you like at the top, and the views are decent, with some good displays on the way up, I’d certainly class it as a ‘must-do’ in the city and would...
Read moreDefinitely a Must go place to visit in Vilnius!
The symbol of Vilnius is visible from many spots in the Old Town and is portrayed in numerous works of art. It is one of the best places to see the magnificent panoramas of Vilnius. Climb Gediminas’ Hill and admire the sunset or go up even higher to the top of the Gediminas Tower for more spectacular views. The red roofs of Vilnius, the church towers, and the narrow streets of the Medieval Old Town are a stunning sight. The tower houses a historic exhibition displaying reconstruction models of the castles of Vilnius, an armament, and iconographic material of old Vilnius.
Gediminas Castle Tower is the most frequently visited branch of the National Museum of Lithuania. Its exhibition invites visitors to learn about the history of Vilnius as the centre of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, and also to take in the most spectacular panoramic view of the city.
As the visitor climbs up the narrow steps of the tower they will discover several levels of exhibits presenting the development of the Vilnius Castle territory, as well as exhibits of Baltic jewellery and important military artefacts.
The second floor contains the interactive exhibition “Visual timeline: a look through the Windows of Gediminas Tower”, which invites visitors to experience an attack by Crusaders; they can also see what Renaissance Vilnius looked like and compare this image with a panorama of the Upper and Lower castles from 1785, a time when these buildings had already lost their political importance. This journey is an opportunity to experience the changes the city has gone through from the 14th to the 21st centuries – by both looking through the tower windows, then at the tower itself.
