The Monument to Grand Duke Gediminas is a must-see when visiting Vilnius. It stands right in the heart of the city – Cathedral Square – next to the Palace of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania and Vilnius Cathedral. The statue was unveiled in 1996, created by the famous Lithuanian sculptor Vytautas Kašuba with architectural design by Mindaugas Šnipas. Gediminas, the legendary founder of Vilnius, is depicted with his hand raised – as if guiding the nation – and a sword by his side, symbolizing strength and defense. • The site is open 24/7 and free of charge. • Cafés, museums, toilets, and souvenir shops are all nearby. • From here, you can easily reach other landmarks: Gediminas Tower, the Palace of the Grand Dukes, Vilnius Cathedral, and Pilies Street. • The square is usually busy, so for the best photos come early in the morning. • In summer, concerts and events often take place here, creating a festive atmosphere. • Read about the “Iron Wolf” legend to fully appreciate why Gediminas is seen as the founder of Vilnius. For me, it’s not just a beautiful monument – it’s a powerful reminder of Lithuania’s roots...
