During the 1890s, pockets of Chinese & Indian immigrants began settling on the banks of the Klang River. With the railway line to Kuala Lumpur & Port Swettenham completed, Klang became the main gateway & trading centre for the Klang Valley. While the Chinese worked in the tin mines, the rubber estates around Klang employed Indian workers. Among them were many Catholics. Priests were sent from Saint John's, Kuala Lumpur to tend to their spiritual welfare. Mass was celebrated in a wooden chapel opposite what was known as the South Klang Bus Station.
