Xerri’s Grotto Hidden beneath an ordinary home in a street that bears the cave’s name in ix-Xagħra, is a small cavern with stalactites and stalagmites. The cave was discovered in 1924 by the current owners’ grandfather while he was digging a well. It is illuminated by electric lights so that visitors can see the rock formations. Entry is via a 10m spiral staircase, built into the original well shaft (so not sutable for anyone with vertigo, mobility problems or a large girth). In the cave you take a circular tour of about 30m past some very pretty calcified formations 25 cm to a metre tall. There are also some interesting formations, which have developed as a result of calcification of tree roots. The visitor will be shown speleothems (stalactites/stalagmites) resembling a tortoise, a vulture, a giraffe and a pair of elephant’s ears. The cave was extended during the Second World War when the family used the cave as an air raid shelter.

Rating: ★★★☆☆ Xerri’s Grotto is a small, unique spot located under someone’s house, which adds to its charm. The person who gave us the tour is the grandson of the original diggers, which made the experience feel personal and authentic. He was friendly but didn’t really check in to see if we had any questions, so it felt a bit rushed. The cave is well-preserved, and it’s fascinating to see the stalagmites and stalactites up close. I’d recommend reading a bit about them before you visit to fully appreciate what you’re seeing. For the small ticket price, it’s definitely worth a visit, though don’t expect to spend too much time here—it's a quick but interesting stop.

Nice little cave full of stalagmites and stalactites that was found under someone's house. Unlike the nearby Ninu's cave this one has been dug out so you can walk around inside it, so it's less natural but there's a lot more to see. Access is via a very narrow spiral staircase - you're basically climbing down inside the well shaft they were digging when they found the cave. Photos are allowed but you can't use flash, so make sure you have a camera that's good in low light conditions.

It’s lovely to have a member of the Xerri family give us a personalised tour of the caves. Our guide explained the history of the caves well and gave us some geology lessons which take us back to secondary school. We found her to have a fantastic sense of humour too! Be careful when walking around here as the spaces can be narrow and paths can get really slippery when wet. A great place to visit, a unique sight in Xagħra and it’s reasonably priced to enter!

Nature is fantastic. A cave under a house, in a town. I'm happy that we found it because we liked it. The lady, who showed to us, the owner. She explained the history and she was very kind. If she is not there just push the bell on the wall and she will appear in 5 minutes. You need to pay only 2.5 Euros per person, I think it is worth. In November we could park in front of the house.

The grotto was a reasonable size which was located at the bottom of a well, with steps leading down, the guide was the grandson of the founder, he gave a brief history, and showed us around the grotto, pointing out different shapes that were representations of animals, and other shapes. The cost was €2.50 which although quite short, represented good value for money
