Mitsui Memorial Museum — Attraction in Tokyo

A wonderful collection of Japanese artworks and antiques. Beautiful examples of maki-e technique implemented throughout history since the edo period.

Most of the pieces had information in both Japanese and English and there were English directories available also.

Note that the museum has no permanent exhibits so may not have the above mentioned collection when visited. If you are planning on visiting many museums during your stay, would recommend getting a Grutto pass to get small discounts at each museum...

Mitsui families were very famous Japanese merchant. They originally started their Gofuku shop , kimono clothe shop, here. They were very famous for reasonable pricing. In Edo era, almost all Gofuku shop sell Kimono by credit but Mitsui sell kimono by cash so they could sell these without risk. Mitsui families were also famous for art collector. 三井財閥所蔵の、中世から近代に至るまでの様々な美術品や工芸品を主体に展示されている美術館です。明治期に建築された三井本館のクラシカルな外観とは打って変わって、美術館内は近未来的な印象を受けます。展示室の数は多いですが各部屋の広さは大小様々。しかも整然とした配置ではなく、他の美術館とは異なった配置で、且つ内装も落ち着いた暗め系から明るい白系まで。次はどんな部屋だろう、どんな展示なんだろう… というワクワク感を持ちながら美術鑑賞巡りが出来る、そんな美術館だと思います。 美術品は勿論ですが、個人的には出口近くにあるアメリカ・モスラー社の書庫扉。かなり圧巻で、これだけでもこの美術館に来た勝ちがあるのかもしれません。

It is an art museum where works od art and crafts from the Middle Ages to the Modern Ages held by Mitsui Zaibatsu(Giant family concern) are exhibited. The Mitsui Honkan(The Mitsui main building), which has this museum, is like a classical building build in Meiji era, but the inside of this museum is very modern impression. Although the number of exhibition rooms is large, the size of those rooms is various(large and small). Moreover, each room is not arranged neatly, it's lika e maze. In addition, there are various atmosphere inside from brightness to darkness. I think that there is contrivance that you can enjoy not only exhibits but also the exhibition rooms themselves. Nevertheless, what I paid most attention is the Mosler Safe Company's Archiving Door...
