Located at the southeastern tip of the peninsula on which the Old Town of Budva is built, the Citadela fortress dominates the entire area. The Citadela was built in the 840s on the ruins of the Greek acropolis, from that period only the northern tower and the eastern walls remain. During the long period of Venetian domination (15th - 18th centuries) the fortress was rebuilt receiving the name of St. Mary, after the name of the church built here. From that period, the former barracks, gates, walls and the ruins (the foundation) of St. Mary's church remained. However, the present aspect of the fortress is due to the Habsburg occupation period (1797-1918, with some interruptions). Although integrated in the walls of the Old Town, the Citadela was designed to withstand prolonged sieges autonomously, being equipped with large reserves of food, ammunition and everything else needed. The citadel is structured on three levels. At the first level, the former barracks houses a restaurant, a small museum with old ship models and an inner courtyard that ends east with a belvedere platform. On the second level, the former barracks has two large rooms transformed into a library-museum, and outside it there is an extended plateau also used as a cultural space (the international "City Theater Festival"). On the plateau is also the foundation of the former church of St. Mary, and the outer edge is a viewing area to the sea. And above, at the top of the tower, is mounted a mast with the flag of Montenegro visible from afar, and, first of all, the platform here is an extraordinary vantage point that offers perspective on both the Old Town and the whole area, from mountain to the sea and to the resort Budva, Montenegro's main...
Read moreWe feel scammed. 5€ entry seems like a reasonable price at first. Especially since at the entrance it is advertised that one can see a library museum, old ruins of a church and old ship collection.
Bur to our surprise, the „library“ consists of 2 small rooms with some random books from germany, austria and france which are locked behind a glass door. Thats it. No explanation, nothing to see except bookshelves you could easily see at your local library as welly
The ruins of the church are literally not there except for two small rocks. Again no plaque or information about it.
The old ship collection / also called „maritime museum“ is honestly the most underwhelming room I have ever been in. It is rougly 10 m2 and has 4-6 old ship models. My grandfather has more at home and there I dont have to pay entry.
All in all we are incredibly disappointed. The place is deeply overadvertised and would benefit a lot from some honesty and information of the place.
We have never felt so scammed by a „historic site“ before.
Please save your money or rather donate it than throwing...
