June 28, 2024: Hiking the Ladder of Kotor to the “Top of the Old Kotor Fort Trail” was an amazing experience and provided stunning views of the old town, Kotor Fortress, and the Bay of Kotor.
For those who wish to complete the hike by continuing on through the forest, be aware that Google Maps doesn’t accurately show the entire route and (speaking from experience) you may lose cell service several switchbacks before you also start to question whether you’re still headed in the right direction. Google Maps shows a single and fairly straight trail with only 3-4 switchbacks as you near the road, but the actual route through the forest quickly changes from straight to switchbacks, some of which are much steeper than those on the first part of the hike. There is also a fork in the trail marked with a street sign where the same trail markers (red circle with white center) you’ve been following to that point direct you to take the left fork, which is incorrect (had I not lost cell service, I would’ve been able to translate the street sign). The fork to the right is marked by red lines and will allow you to complete the entire Ladder of Kotor at the road and make a well deserved stop at Restaurant Nevjesta Jadrana.
My wife and I almost got divorced during the last km of the hike, but it was worth it. We were almost out of water and about to give up when the restaurant finally came into view. The views from the top are absolutely stunning and allow you to see all the way to the Adriatic Sea. After rehydrating (including a beer or two) and enjoying some Greek salads, we hiked back down to the old town in less than half the time it...
Read moreYou can access a trail to the top from the old city.
It takes up to 2 hours to get to the top, but hardly more. I did it in an hour and a half.
It is essentially stairs all the way with stops with viewing points.
During the day you will meet a couple guys, mid way and at the top, selling cold drinks e.g. (3€ for a bottle of water or coke)
No toilets, but bins are available.
Also, at the beginning of a trail there will be a guy who will be selling tickets (€8), however, a local told me that if no one is there it is okay to just go ahead. No one will be checking these tickets and no one did ✌️
Also, if you go there late enough or early enough, it is unlikely that you will have to pay 😜
Enjoy! It is lovely to grab snacks, come earlier and meet the...
Read moreThe ladder of Kotor is a little known but wonderful hike just next to the well known and touristy wall of Kotor. The views are spectacular, you can get to the wall for free (entrance normally is €8) and the hike can go for much longer. We took an hour and 15mins to reach the top (walking fast and without stops). Bring plenty of water. Once you get to the top, you can continue to reach one of the villages in Cetinje if you walk for another hour or so.
You get spectacular views (of the wall too) and there are two stops along the way where locals sell drinks and snacks. The couple living in the older house lives there all year round and makes cheese, some kind of brandy, and other products. They are super nice people but don't speak...
