You'll see St John if you take the FREE way to get to the top of Kotor Fortress. It's north of the city walls and up the switchbacks you can see lined out in GMaps. Save yourself 8 euros!!
If you go the free route, go in the morning so there is shade from the mountain. It's just switchbacks of rocky footpath so make sure to wear good shoes. You'll meet a few locals, and try to enjoy their homemade rakia or treats! I saw a donkey, cat and a cow while visiting and it was an awesome experience than the dilapidated stairs...

The church & surrounding area is lovely & gets you away from the crowds of the old town . Don't miss the secret passage that leads to the beautiful valley on the backside of the fort - it's marked with a red circle by the window/ entryway.
