The Muraille de Tanger also known as the wall of Tangier is located near to the port (Port of Tangier Ville) and is fundamentally a fort. The Portuguese fortress is built into the hill and has many floors. At the top there are a collection of guns and cannons that historically defended the city.
From the fortress there are great viewpoints of Plage Municipale beach, Kasbar Mosque, the port and Sidi Bou Abud Mosque. The ancient walls lead to the Medina (narrow streets with traditional shops and restaurants). The Medina is bustling and is a fascinating place to witness authentic Moroccan culture. There are lots of places to eat local cuisine and the shops are full of souvenirs, trinkets and traditional Moroccan merchandise such as gandoura's (traditional clothes), rugs, lamps and spices. If visiting Tangier, I would definitely recommend a visit to both the Medina and Muraille de Tanger. The streets were immaculately clean and the people were very friendly...
