We recently enjoyed a 10-night Western Mediterranean Cruise on the MSC Lirica sailing from Alicante (cost £420 each in January). The fourth stop was Tangier and it was a short walk to the end of the port where there was a small market selling souvenirs. Other attractions at the port included the beach (Plage Municipale) and marina, Kasbah Mosque, Muraille de Tanger (a free fort / museum) and a labyrinth of narrow streets with bazaars, market stalls and restaurants (streets surrounding Continental Hotel). More information on the port is available on the Google site What's in Port (cruise guide for 1200 ports).
At the port it was possible to explore the city with a guide, by taxi or the 'hop on hop off' City Tour bus (kiosk located opposite Kasbah Mosque)'. It cost 13€ for two tours, a 1-hour tour of the old city in the morning and a 2-hour tour of the countryside in the afternoon. The ticket was valid for 48-hours and you could hop on and off as often as you liked
Beware if you get off the bus, there is 1 hour wait in the morning and 2 hours wait in the afternoon
The morning tour of the city runs every hour and the bus was driven through the narrow streets lined with traditional shops. Historical points of interest included Place 9 Avril (the square where King Mohammed V gave his speech in 1947), the Palais Moulay Hafid (palace of Italian institutions), Mosque Mohammed V which was completed in 1983, Place Faro (Portuguese cannons), the square Sahet El Omumame, IBN Batouta shopping centre and Villa Harris Park and museum.
The afternoon tour runs every two hours and we got on the bus at around 14:20pm. The driver advised us not to get off the bus, because there would be a 2 hour wait for the next and we would miss the cruise ship. The tour was very picturesque and we passed the modern shopping centre Socco Alto, lots of luxury villas and beaches with camels, donkeys, horses and amazing views of the straits of Gibraltar. The bus stopped at Parc Perdicaris for about 20 minutes. The views from here were stunning, there was a cafe, rest rooms, wild boar and it was possible to have your picture taken with a bird of prey and to ride a camel. We also briefly visited the botanical gardens (Jardin Donabo), the light house at Cap Spartel and Grottes d'Hercule (caves) before returning to the port.
We would definitely recommend visiting Tangier because the people were extremely friendly, the city was immaculately clean and there was lots to do including visiting the shrine, Tomb of Ibn Batutta , Merkala Beach, the Moshe Nahon Synagogue, Kasbah Museum of Contemporary Art, Plage Bakassem beach, Mnar Park waterpark, Tangier American Legation Museum, Dalia Beach, Syrian Mosque, Plage Sol beach and Marshan Park.
Equally, we would recommend the city tour bus especially if you are limited on time and only want an overview of the main sites. The bus was very clean, there was free Wi-Fi, the staff were friendly and ensured that people queued when getting on the bus, the audio guide was very informative and the tour was operated perfectly and efficiently. In our opinion the tour was excellent value for money and we would definitely...
Read moreA disgrace for Tangier's tourism! If you are there for the instagram stories I recommend it, but for anything else it is the absolute worse!!!! The views along tge road are beautiful, but the bus experience ruined it.
If you are not familiar with the city, you'll learn absolutely nothing about it. No one will talk to you, and tell you thing! All you get is the very low quality Recorded narrations that are bearly hearable.
The bus driver and staff are in a hurry. After the non stop 1h trip, we got to spend 10 mins only in Cap Spartel (Which is not enough at all - You'll have to visit the Museum, enjoy the Atlantic vs Meditteanean view). After being 5 mins late, the found out with some other people that the bus left us there.
I traveled across the entire country and experienced many many things, good and bad! But frankly, This was one of the a worst experiences. thank you City Tour for trying to ruin my...
Read moreThis was an interesting experience for my 3 year old to experience, pricing is good, two different bus tour trajectory, so all good, eveything you expect from a hop on hop off tour, however the biggest "ouch" moment was us getting off a stop in the city, and coming back to wait for the bus later and waiting for about 2 hours, tried calling the number on the flyer but it gave "busy" line, a woman approached us to say that it stops the tour on this area around 3is p.m, something we weren't made aware of and nobody even took it upon themselves to tell us when we got off the bus. That was a big no no for me, I know this city so I felt somewhat safe, imagine it happening for people who have a language barrier and know nothing about Tangier, mind you, I waited next to Tanger city centre, next to the train station, I don't need to add anything more for those who know train...
